Role
Penumbra one of Scotland’s largest mental health charities is looking to recruit new board members.
Penumbra Board Members are a valued and important part of the organisation. Our Board Members are committed to the aims and ethos of the organisation and to ensuring that its activities are in the interests of beneficiaries.
We would welcome applications from a range of backgrounds and experience including commercial and business management, finance, marketing and public relations, law, social and mental health policy or care provision, human resource management and also applications from people who have direct or family experience of mental health issues.
Our Board Members should have, or be prepared to gain, an understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities inherent in the role. Board members may also be subject to the Protecting Vulnerable Adults (PVG) scheme.
Essential Qualities
- Commitment to Penumbra’s vision, objects, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities.
- Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to respect the confidences of colleagues.
- Balancing tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise.
Desirable
- Prior experience of committee/trustee work.
- Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a Trustee/Company Director.
- Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by Penumbra.
- A wider involvement with the voluntary sector.
- Experience of being part of, or working with, less represented communities and an ability to promote equality, diversity and inclusion through the board and the work of Penumbra.
- Experience of committee work, some experience of charity finance, charity fundraising.
Time Commitment
- The Board meets 6 times a year in Edinburgh. In addition board members join either the People, Quality, Improvement sub-committee or the Finance, Risk and Audit sub-committee (these meet 3/4 times per year each).
- The Board and Senior Management have a residential 24 hour event once every two years
- In addition to Board Meetings, other contact – usually electronic or by telephone – will be necessary.

As an organisation it therefore needs to develop so that it can support the mental health needs of Scotland in the years ahead. Empowered by its 2021-25 strategic plan, Penumbra is committed to expanding its reach so that people have access to the right support at the right time.
To do this, Penumbra needs to achieve its full income generating potential as a national third sector organisation. As a key part of Penumbra’s Leadership Team, you will develop and implement our Business Development strategy, blending statutory and commissioned funding with trading and fundraising, You will develop and lead our Business Development team and will play a vital role in how we grow and deliver for the people of Scotland.
We are looking for someone who has experience of working at a senior strategic level and who has extensive experience in a commercially focussed environment. We are happy to hear from you if you are from the third, private or public sector. You will need to evidence that your strategy and execution have produced significant income benefit for your organisation. You will also need to have drive, determination to succeed, and leadership experience in getting your team to produce tangible results and, above all, an empathy and passion for the work of Penumbra.

Who are we?
Operating since 2004, now in our 20th year of operation, Break the Silence is a registered charity in Scotland and a Company Limited by Guarantee. We make a profound and positive difference in the lives of those affected by childhood sexual trauma, their partners and family members. We support all genders, age 13+ across East and North Ayrshire.
We offer a professional counselling service, accredited by British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (one of only 3 accredited organisations in Scotland) and were recently awarded Ayrshire Chamber’s prestigious Business Excellence Award 2024.
The Board meets quarterly online and recently due to two trustees reaching their full term of service we now have vacancies for two people to support the existing Board and staff team in evolving the charity further.
About you

About the Organisation: Quiet Waters offers bereavement listening support, and counselling for individuals and couples. We welcome employees and volunteers from all faiths and none, but request they are in sympathy with the founding principles of the organisation which are based in the Christian Faith.
Job Purpose: To assist the Board in delivering the services of Quiet Waters and support our team of bereavement listeners and volunteer counsellors, including students on placement.
Job Requirements: Applications are invited from qualified counsellors with a minimum of 2 years post qualification supervised counselling practice working with adults, ideally with a minimum 450 hours supervised counselling practice. You should have experience of working with complex client needs, e.g. trauma, suicidal ideation, and have experience of assessing clients.
The job is challenging and varied. The work requires a self-motivated individual able to work in a team but also able to work independently. The work will take place in our premises in Camelon, near Falkirk. Our premises are not currently wheelchair accessible. There will be times when the jobholder will be alone in the office. Occasional home working is possible.
