As a Trustee you will play an important role in setting the strategic direction of the charity whilst providing support, guidance and constructive challenge to the Board and the CEO. You will also act as an ambassador for MND Scotland and help us ensure that everyone right across the country knows of the work we do and how we can help them if they need us.

Becoming one of our Trustees is not something to be undertaken lightly. It takes commitment, passion and dedication. You may be pushed out of your comfort zone on occasion or indeed frequently. If that makes you uncomfortable then you’re probably not who we are looking for. If however, you are looking to help make a real difference to people’s lives and to grow both personally and professionally then we’d be really keen to hear from you, particularly if you have a background in any of the specified areas we are looking for.

Previous Board experience would be great but it’s not essential. You don’t have to have a personal link to MND. Nor do you have to have a charity background, however, this may be beneficial. What is much more important is your passion, ability to think strategically and your desire to get involved and make a difference. We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team as Research Lead, to deliver our research funding programme. MND Scotland is committed to funding research into motor neuron disease because we think it is about time there was a cure. Our research funding schemes support researcher across the UK and encompass a range of approaches including fundamental neuroscience, social science and clinical trials. Reporting to the Director of Research, your role is to lead on the delivery and management of our research funding schemes, research-related events and communications. You will also work with the Involvement Lead to integrate the perspective of people affected by MND across our research funding activities.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

This role underpins the commitment by MND Scotland to supporting research into motor neuron disease with the aim of improving quality of life for people affected by MND, improving standards of care and, ultimately, finding a cure. Reporting to the Director of Research, you will be responsible for:

• Delivering and managing research funding competitions, ensuring that the research supported by MND Scotland is the very best.
• Managing a portfolio of funded grants and fellowships, making sure the finances are properly managed and the research is on track.
• Organising events for our research community and for the public.
• Alongside our Communications Team, you will generate research-related news content
• Working with key stakeholders such as the MND Scotland Research Committee, MND researchers and clinical trial specialists, university administration staff, people affected by MND and the general public.

We are looking for a passionate and dynamic Human Resources Lead to join our Operations function as HR Advisor. MND Scotland is in a period of rapid growth and change. Having just celebrated our 40th anniversary, with a new CEO and Executive Leadership Team in place and a new 3-year strategy and brand launched during the summer, this is an incredibly exciting time to join us.

Reporting to the Director of Operations our HR Lead is a new role, created to reflect the importance of an engaged and committed staff team and a culture of inclusion, respect and collaboration.

This Senior Management Team role will provide comprehensive strategic HR advice and support to the CEO and Executive Leadership team whilst also end-to-end generalist HR support to the wider staff team and working as a trusted partner to develop people plans and procedures aligned to our values.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of our Senior Management team, you will have a broad remit of responsibilities as well as demonstrable experience of working alongside a recognised union.

Key responsibilities of the Human Resources Lead role will include:

• Provide support and advice in all areas of HR for the organisation. Responsible for delivering end-to-end generalist HR support including recruitment, new starters and leavers processes, payroll & pensions, employee engagement, disciplinary and grievance processes, performance management, and learning & development.
• Manage complex employee relations or people issues as a member of the joint consultation and negotiation committee. Provide professional HR expertise and advice to ensure risk is assessed and judgement is applied, and informed decisions are made.
• Lead review of current salary banding, job titles and pay and rewards schemes.
• Review, refine and drive the employee appraisals, ensuring employees receive regular feedback and have opportunities for progression.

The successful candidate will ensure that the financial management is done in adherence with all statutory and regulatory requirements, whilst providing financial clarity to inform decision making and action.

Reporting to the organisation’s lead on Welfare Rights, our Financial Support Lead, you will ensure that people with MND and their families access the benefits to which they’re entitled. You will work with people affected by MND to identify their entitlements, based on their individual circumstances, and submit appropriate applications. Liaising with public bodies, as required, assisting clients in navigating often complex application processes and ensuring speedy access to benefits. Reassuring people with MND that they are being supported through a difficult situation.

You will be a highly motivated individual, have experience in welfare and benefits, have excellent communication skills and enjoy new challenges. A clear understanding of statutory welfare and benefits systems and processes is essential. As well as an awareness of the barriers faced by people with significant illness in society. We are recruiting five new Trustees to join our Board, including one individual to take on the role of Secretary. As a Trustee you will play an important role in setting the strategic direction of the charity whilst providing support, guidance and constructive challenge to the Board and the CEO. You will also act as an ambassador for MND Scotland and help us ensure that everyone right across the country knows of the work we do and how we can help them if they need us.

Becoming one of our Trustees is not something to be undertaken lightly. It takes commitment, passion and dedication. You may be pushed out of your comfort zone on occasion or indeed frequently. If that makes you uncomfortable then you’re probably not who we are looking for. If however, you are looking to help make a real difference to people’s lives and to grow both personally and professionally then we’d be really keen to hear from you, particularly if you have a background in any of the following areas:

• Stakeholder Engagement - with particular experience in the areas of political influencing and/or the creation of sustainable partnerships.
• Marketing and Communications - with experience in strategy development, campaign delivery, digital innovation and brand management.
• Fundraising - with sound experience of charity fundraising at strategic and operational levels, and experience of all significant fundraising disciplines.
• Legal - with broad legal experience, ideally with expertise of charity law in practice.
• Human Resources - with particular experience of developing a strategic and visionary HR framework.

Previous Board experience would be great but it’s not essential. You don’t have to have a personal link to MND. Nor do you have to have a charity background. We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Communications Officer to join our small but dynamic team, to support us during a year of growth and development.

This is an exciting time to be part of MND Scotland’s communications team as we are embarking on several large-scale projects over the coming year and need someone who can hit the ground running to deliver clear and impactful communications to a range of audiences.

Reporting to our Communications Manager and working closely with our other Communications Officer, you will support teams across the charity to deliver engaging content for various channels including social media, website, printed resources and press.

We’re particularly looking for someone who is skilled in developing and growing social media channels, and who has a flair and passion for storytelling.
