Role

Do you feel passionately about improving the life chances of children, young people and families?

Are you curious about the possibilities of integrating Design with social research and systems thinking?

Dartington Service Design Lab is an internationally respected research and design charity focussed on using evidence and design in innovative ways to help those working with children and young people to have a greater impact. As an organisation, we have more than 50 years of experience working across the public and voluntary sectors.

We are boosting our staff with a number of new positions including a Senior Service Designer. We are looking for the successful candidate to be based in Scotland to support our dedicated Scottish team to do meaningful work in the Scottish context, as well as working on projects across the UK.

The Senior Designer will enjoy a varied and independent role spanning public system reform, service design, co-design with young people and place-based systems change related to services for children and families. The role involves collaboration and support for the growing Design team. It also involves working in an inter-disciplinary and collaborative way with the Senior Management, Research and Communications teams to continue to develop methods to integrate Design with evidence-informed social science, research and systems thinking approaches.

The work is rarely routine and the successful candidate would have the opportunity to make the role their own. We are often experimenting and trying to innovate together and with those who we work with. We value empathy, collaboration and community participation, with a focus on using evidence for social good.

We need a Senior Service Designer who is able to take a leading role on Design and related projects, provide support to colleagues and actively grow our Design culture. We are seeking a Designer with at least 3-5 years’ experience, this may be directly in service design or in a related field, ideally within the social sector, and with experience using evidence and research processes.

Key responsibilities are included in the job description document.

We value curiosity, collaboration, rigor and practicality. As a team, this looks and feels like a creative team who share ideas and inspiration daily; a team who celebrates each other’s successes, and shares the load when work is challenging; a team who is committed to advancing the highest standards through learning and evolving our practices; a team that focuses on the impact of our work and the difference we can make.

Our approach to design is intentional, relational and evidence-enriched. We work in complex environments with people actively working to improve the life changes of children, young people, their carers and communities. Our design work is grounded by social purpose, robustness of practice, anti-racist approaches to design and a culture of learning and improvement. We are currently strengthening our design team, and this role has the opportunity to shape both design strategy and practice at Dartington.

We operate remotely across the Great Britain with regular project-related travel when it is safe to do so. Over the past 4 years we have successfully been using online and video communication tools to deliver our work. Our staff tend to work from home or, when appropriate, together in local co-working spaces, and normally, every quarter we meet as a whole team in our beautiful Devon office. We are committed to supporting the health, wellbeing and professional development of all of our staff and offer a modest additional and very flexible individual allowance to contribute to this investment.

We strive for diversity in our team. If we’re going to design impactful services for children and families, we need to ensure our team is inclusive. Dartington encourages applications from all backgrounds and are committed to having a team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences, including lived experience, and abilities.
