About us
We are a fast-paced and progressive organisation, that aims to support children, young people, and their families through the provision of positive activity.
Fuse makes a commitment to contribute to the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework and its contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in supporting our community to adapt to life in 2021 and beyond. With poverty, digital exclusion, and rising unemployment prevalent in our community. Fuse has identified and embedded the following key themes into their business strategy and programming:
Fuse supports and serves its community by; continually striving towards an inclusive facility; being a progressive organisation that meets the needs of its community and being a knowledgeable and informed organisation.
Purpose of Job
Our “Sharing Shettleston” project has arisen out of work we have carried out in recent years relating to issues such as healthy eating on a budget, digital inclusion, and energy efficiency (the latter as part of a major climate change project we have delivered). People taking part in these activities have asked us to do even more to support individuals and families given the current cost of living crisis and, to build financial resilience across the community.
“Sharing Shettleston” will be a regular daytime club for Shettleston residents, based in the excellent facility we have at Fuse. It will be aimed at adult individuals and families on low incomes across Shettleston, including people in part-time, fragile, and low paid employment as well as those on out-of-work benefits. These groups have been particularly affected by the cost-of-living crisis.
The project will be promoted as a social activity, thus avoiding any stigma that could pertain to people in poverty, or otherwise struggling, having to seek help.
It will deliver a regular programme of community-based and community-led activities and workshops, promoting a “do it yourself” approach and helping people to save money and build their financial resilience. The key elements will include:
The club will be open for at least two days per week over the course of the year and we will look at extending hours during winter, when the needs we have described are particularly acute. We expect to deliver at least 50 formal “workshop” activities over this time, whilst participants will also be engaged as individuals and in small groups taking part in the activities described above.
We will provide basic, free refreshments (tea, coffee, juice, biscuits) which will enhance the “café” feel and encourage people to make use of the club. There are currently no community centres open in Shettleston (so there is a gap in local provision and for a free, safe, warm welcoming spaces for people to go to, delivering the above cost of living benefits and wider benefits in addressing social isolation and helping to improve people’s mental health).
The Sharing Shettleston club also gives us a chance to promote other services that are available in the area, focused either on income maximisation (e.g. Money Matters) or on helping to reduce people’s outgoings (e.g. the local Pantry).

Purpose of Job - A Multiply Funded Project
The Project Coordinator will lead a team of three Project Workers to deliver an adult engagement programme across Shettleston, in particular supporting parents / carers of children at three primary schools in our area – Eastbank, St. Timothy’s and Thorntree Primary schools. In addition, we will deliver similar support to parents at St. Andrew’s Secondary as well as a programme of support within Fuse itself, targeted at the wider community.
The programme is targeted at those needing the confidence to take the initial steps to improving their numeracy and so will be relatively light touch, acting as a “gateway” to other numeracy support offered through Multiply. Our intention is not to duplicate existing numeracy provision but to complement and add value to it. Where we can best do this is by engaging potential participants in a way that others cannot because of our position and existing relationships and focusing specifically on light-touch confidence building and basic skills elements. We anticipate that this will encourage our participants to engage with further, more intensive numeracy support, and we will set specific targets for us referring participants to these other providers.
We anticipate that take-up at a school’s level will disproportionately be from female parents / carers, albeit we will encourage participation from both females and males. We expect that wider community provision will place a particular emphasis on encouraging males to take part and programmes and promotional activity will be constructed to encourage this.
Some of the initial platforms for engagement may be sessions which will be simple entry level participation. Walking Groups, health and fitness and baking have all been used in the past to build confidence and relationships.
Typically, these programmes will involve:

Main duties and responsibilities:
Funded by the National Lottery, the Shettleston 100 project brings together key partners in Shettleston, led by Fuse Youth Café. It aims to raise awareness of climate change and help reduce wasteful and unsustainable consumption, showing that people can reduce their climate impact whilst also saving money. Shettleston residents will be asked to volunteer to complete purchase, consumption, and waste diaries, which will identify how households can change behaviours to reduce their costs and environmental impact. Individual reports will be produced, highlighting these changes as well as quantifying potential carbon and financial savings.
Following this, volunteers will then be asked to complete diaries for a further period to provide an understanding of the before and after picture.
Community engagement will be supported through filming a selection of the diaries, telling the story of what has worked, the benefits of taking part, the challenges, and how they have been overcome. This material will be used in a digital and social media campaign over the life of the project, involving social media advertising, podcasts, and appearances in existing local media.
A pop-up shopfront will be established to showcase the project and people’s experiences including opportunities for people in the wider community to reduce their wasteful consumption and their carbon footprint. This will also be a venue in which the wider community will come together for events and activities, such as climate cafes, workshops exploring specific themes, or discussions around experiences and findings. In the final three months of the project, a future strategy will be co-produced for waste reduction and consumption in Shettleston.
This is an opportunity to take a 12-month post and turn it into a career. There is no doubt that this work is needed, and the post-holder will receive the full backing of Fuse. The community needs this service, it is a core objective for us and increasingly funders are willing to support Climate Change projects. We just need someone to work with us to develop it further.
