35 hpw Family Support Worker

This is a 3 year post funded by The National Lottery Community Fund/Improving Lives grant and commences on 1st July 2023 to ends on 30th June 2026

WORK REMIT: To provide focussed family support to families with complex needs. The aim of which is to improve factors such as:

  • Build parenting capacity
  • Improve the educational attendance of children
  • Support parents/families to reach more positive destinations
  • Modify parenting behaviours and risks which cause risk to children
  • Increase confidence and self-worth levels

Key elements of the work:

To work within targets and/or Early Intervention and in line with the GIRFEC principles and SHANARRI wellbeing model.

To work with parents and their children in their homes and in groups, within and outside of core office hours including evenings and weekends, to increase the skills, confidence and abilities of all family members to live their daily lives in a positive and safe way.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. To offer emotional and practical support to parents and their families, in their own homes and in the community.
  2. To offer a whole family / family centred approach to families with complex needs.
  3. To understand the context and remit of families who are in need of support and the necessary focus to the work.
  4. To ensure you have an understanding (appropriate to your role) of, and comply with the North United Communities procedures for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
  5. To build a trusting relationship with the parents and young people to help alleviate or break their social isolation and increase capacity.
  6. To build up knowledge and understanding of local resources and community and statutory services, including Mental Health Teams, Social Services, Health, CAMHS, Schools and voluntary services, and communicate effectively with them in the best interests of the child and family.
  7. To comply with North United Communities’ Equalities and Diversities Policy, Child Protection Policy and Data Protection Policy in every aspect of your work and positively promote the principles of these policies amongst colleagues, service users and other members of the community.
  8. To work alongside colleagues to assess the needs of the families referred for support and participate in the reviews and evaluation of the work.
  9. To comply and contribute actively to the required monitoring of outcomes for the service.
  10. To help plan creative and innovative responses to families’ needs, to keep timed and in-depth records of supports and to assist with the preparation of reports.
  11. To attend conferences, review meetings, supervision and training sessions as requested.
  12. To ensure that work is carried out within a framework, which promotes equality of opportunity in accordance with North United Communities’ policies.
  13. To comply with North United Communities’ Health and Safety policy, data protection policy and to protect your own and other’s health, safety and welfare.
  14. To ensure you have an understanding (appropriate to your role) of, and comply with North United Communities’ procedures for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
  15. To work flexibly as will be required by the needs of the service including evening and weekend work, and to carry out any other reasonable duties as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Family Support Worker requirements:

  • An appropriate social care qualification equivalent to at least NVQ level 3.
  • Must have knowledge and experience of direct work with families who have complex needs and knowledge and experience of Trauma Informed Practice.
  • Must have knowledge and experience of the roles and responsibilities of statutory and voluntary services and experiences of liaising with them.
  • Understanding of Safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults.
  • Experience of working in culturally diverse communities.
  • Experience of working with people in their homes.
  • Ability to undertake the work within an anti-discriminatory and empowerment framework.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Active listening skills along with patience and ability to work under pressure.
  • Commitment to make a positive difference to the lives of their clients
  • To have high levels of compassion and empathy.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to give accurate information and practical support to family members of all ages.
  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports and use regular IT packages.

Youth Development Worker (10 hours per week)

The Development Worker will be based in any of North United Communities Ltd (NUC) operational points, namely Ruchill, Milton and Wyndford and in any other areas of work encompassed by NUC, including street work operations.

Position reports to: Project Co-ordinator.

Job Purpose:

The Creative Pathways Project will provide a range of learning experiences through dedicated and specific elements: drama/creative programmes, leadership programmes and accredited learning programmes. These programmes are an extension to our current service delivery, and will therefore support young people to develop further skills and qualifications.

Along with the Project Co-ordinator, the Development Worker will be responsible for developing and creating these activities and programmes in line with the key elements in the BBC Children in Need funding;

As this is a new project, the Development Worker will also be involved in setting up a monitoring and evaluation system to capture and measure the impact of these.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • The Development Worker will be involved in recruitment of young people into the project.
  • They will be involved the planning and delivery of these programmes.
  • Involvement in measuring impact in line with the outcomes set by the funder.
  • To ensure the sessions have the right resources and correct set-up procedures.
  • To have an awareness and recognition of child protection concerns, and have the ability to deal with this professionally.
  • To make contact and develop supportive relationships with parents of the young people in the groups, and parents of other young people who may be particularly at risk because of alcohol, drugs, or any other issues relating to young people
  • To keep a record of the work and also provide written reports and the end of each session, with a view to constructing a report at the end of the funding terms, which may be at various times throughout the year
  • To report any issues or potential issues with service users, property, staff, or sessions immediately.
  • To be competent in operating email, texts, and Microsoft Office software programmes (e.g Word & excel) that will enable communications between co-workers and line managers, and to effectively write up required reports.
  • To be competent in developing promotional material and using social media platforms.
  • To become familiar with the company’s policies and procedures.
  • To turn up for work at the stated starting time of the shift, and to leave at the stated finish time of the shift.
  • To maintain appropriate confidentiality.
  • To undertake staff development and training as required.

Family Development Worker

This position entails assessing the needs of families and local residents and planning and delivering programmes related to these. This work will take place in the community of Milton, in North Glasgow. Through participating in these programmes, parents/family members will have increased confidence and self-esteem and have a better outlook for their own and their children’s future.

Job Purpose:

  • To provide support to families which will seek to?
  • Improve parenting capacity.
  • Improve family function with children feeling more secure and parents more confident in their parenting abilities.
  • Increase aspirations and motivation of families and individuals to take up opportunities.
  • To work in partnership with families and individuals to plan, implement and co-ordinate programmes to improve outcomes for all stakeholders.

Key activities:

  1. To deliver and evaluate the impact of parenting programmes/courses to parents and carers in community based premises.
  2. To support individual pieces of Family Support in the home and/or centre and hold a caseload of families.
  3. To attend safeguarding core groups meetings and case conferences, as and when required.
  4. To signpost and refer parents and carers to other services for specific support and expertise.
  5. To work and liaise with a range of partnership agencies and organisations, both locally and city-wide. This will include social work, education, and health amongst many other local and city-wide agencies and organisations.

The general duties will include:

  • Ensuring that adequate records and reports are compiled and kept up to date.
  • Carrying out projects and assignments as required.
  • Ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Youth Worker (6 hours per week)

The Youth Workers will be based in any of North United Communities Ltd (NUC) operational points, namely Ruchill, Milton and Wyndford and in any other areas of work encompassed by NUC, including street work operations.

Position reports to: Youth Work Co-ordinator/Organisation Manager

Job Purpose:

Along with the other workers, the Youth Workers will plan, deliver and evaluate groups and activities for young people. They will have an understanding of the needs and issues affecting young people, and be able to meet these through creating community-based inputs and opportunities.

The purpose of the groups being to build the confidence and self- esteem of young people, giving them a chance to find a range of interests through diversionary activities and group interaction. These will also directly address the issues of risk taking behaviours, employability, health & safety, hygiene, internet safety, drugs and alcohol education, peer pressures, self-esteem issues, gang involvement and any other pertinent topics regarding young people and their peers.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • The Group work Assistant will work closely with the other workers in North United Communities, and will work as part of a team.
  • To undertake individual work with young people who require this level of support.
  • To deliver educational sessions, arts & crafts activities, drama, music, sports, cooking, healthy eating, school holiday trips and other relevant activities.
  • To ensure the sessions have the right resources and correct set-up procedures.
  • To have an awareness and recognition of child protection concerns, and have the ability to deal with this professionally.
  • To make contact and develop supportive relationships with parents of the young people in the groups, and parents of other young people who may be particularly at risk because of alcohol, drugs, or any other issues relating to young people.
  • To initiate and participate in detached street work where provided sessions are not being attended, or proposed sessions are to be advertised and promoted. All staff should be working to encompass young people into the youth work programmes, including seeking out direct contact with young people.
