Who we are looking for:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team in Scotland as a Policy and Public Affairs Officer. This can be a home-based role but will require regular travel to the National Autistic Society Scotland’s office in Glasgow and the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

The Policy and Public Affairs Officer will work to influence government policy and create positive change for autistic people and their families.

The successful candidate will raise awareness of National Autistic Society Scotland amongst key political stakeholders, develop and deliver the organisation’s public affairs activity, and support the development of the strategic relationships we need to influence nationally. The Policy and Public Affairs Officer will also work alongside the Media and Communications Officer to support campaigning activities in Scotland and promote our public affairs activity to external audiences.

The successful candidate must have proven understanding of policy or parliamentary work, including knowledge of government and parliamentary structures. They must be comfortable analysing information, grasping complex policy issues and communicating these in an accessible way. They should be educated to degree level in an appropriate discipline or have a proven track record in the policy or political field. An understanding of voluntary sector and/or disability issues is desirable, as is a knowledge and understanding of campaigning methods.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for a highly motivated and results driven individual with extensive experience of volunteer management, to join our team as a Senior Branch Engagement Officer – Scotland.

Our network of Branches are entirely volunteer run by parents, carers and autistic individuals who want to make a difference to autistic people. They are local, community led and entirely responsive to the needs of autistic people in their area.

In this role, you will be responsible for supporting these branches to implement policies and procedures to keep activities safe and legal and become more sustainable.

To be successful, you will have good communication skills and have strong leadership qualities. You will need to have a good knowledge and understanding of volunteer management and be educated to at least university degree level in an appropriate discipline or proven track record in the field.

Where you will be working:

This role will be home based, so you must be able to work remotely (IT equipment will be provided). Candidates must be based in Scotland.

This is a permanent contract working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Following a recent award from the National Lottery Community Fund - Young Start the National Autistic Society Scotland require a suitably skilled individual to join our Social Programme Team.

Empower Up is a project that will empower young autistic people aged 12 – 19 years to build confidence, social skills, and connections.

Autistic people experience communication and sensory differences, which can make forming social relationships and social interaction difficult. In Scotland, 67% of autistic people feel socially isolated, and they are four times more likely to experience chronic loneliness than the general population.

Who we are looking for:

We are excited to be expanding our team to deliver a project to work with autistic young people aged 12 – 19 years. This Project is a 2-fold programme of support for autistic young people, working with 3 different groups delivering social navigation modules and social group sessions.

You will be working with 3 groups per year: -

Groups 1: Youth Group for autistic young people aged 12-15, meeting online and in-person in Glasgow

Group 2: Young Person’s Group for autistic young people aged 16-19, meeting online and in person in Glasgow

Group 3: Online Group for autistic young people aged 12-15, meeting online open to young people across Scotland.

Media and Communications Officer

As Media and Communications Officer, you will be central to our mission to increase public understanding and awareness of autism and the challenges individuals, and their families face.

You will have an eye for a good news story, as well as sourcing, developing and placing media pieces in print, online and broadcast. You will also be confident in working closely with journalists and other media professionals.

Important to us is supporting and empowering autistic people and their families to share their experiences, which helps lead to real understanding and change.

You will be skilled at coordinating our social media channels, developing engaging and compelling content with advice, guidance, and information on the services we provide.

You will also collect and edit content for our magazine ‘News and Views’ which goes out to our members across Scotland, making sure it’s an engaging and informative publication.

Finally, you are a team player, working well in a small but busy team. You will work closely with the Policy and Public Affairs Officer, especially on campaign communications. You will connect with colleagues across the UK, with an eye for both the small and bigger picture.

Speech & Language Therapist (Northern Ireland)

We are looking to appoint a Speech & Language Therapist to join our adult services team in Carryduff, Belfast. Carryduff supports up to 11 Autistic people in a Day Centre and hopes to develop outreach services.

We are looking for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist with a positive attitude, who has a passion to work in an organisation that specialises in autism and who will join a team to ensure the people we support can live their best life possible.

The National Autistic Society view good communication practice as a key element of support and a priority to gain a good quality of life and positive outcomes. Our therapist is a valued member of our team.

This is a unique and exciting post offering the opportunity to manage your own caseload and be actively involved in promoting real change in people’s daily lives.

The therapist can really get to know the people we support, families and staff team due to the compact nature of the service and truly work in a meaningful way.

As a therapist you will be involved in assessment, working directly with people supported implementing therapeutic input. This includes, providing and creating relevant resources, linking with families, working with staff team, and other professionals and providing needs led training.

The post also offers the opportunity to be involved as part of the team in service design and development moving forwards.

Continued professional development is supported and encouraged with a range of training being offered.

Clinical and operational supervision is provided to give support and promote professional links.

The post holder will be based in the Carryduff, service. Working 37 hours per week, although part time hours could be considered, this is mainly office hours but you will, on occasions, be asked to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service. There is some scope to work from home as work demands permit.

We are looking for a Full-Time (35 hours a week) Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner (PBS) to join our Positive Behaviour Support Team which provides support and advice to NAS adult services in Belfast.

The successful candidate will support us in providing a consistent person centred approach in the delivery of high quality services to a wide range of autistic individuals based on the Positive Behaviour Support competency framework.

Where you will be based: Belfast.

We need you to be resilient, caring and sensitive towards the needs of autistic people with a passion for specialist autism provision and improving the life chances of autistic people and their families.

The PBS team is a national integrated network of area behaviour specialists, dedicated to the design and implementation of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) for autistic individuals who present distressed responses. You will work under the direction and supervision of the PBS Lead for the area, you will receive clinical supervision, which can be used as a formal process of professional support, reflection and learning that contributes to individual development.

Within this role you will be accountable for a clinical caseload, working in partnership with operational staff, to develop innovative and person-centred approaches that will enable autistic people to have fulfilled and active lives, thereby reducing the probability of distressed responses.

The post holder will have experience of conducting holistic assessments (incorporating functional assessment) of the nature and context in which distressed responses occur. This will include writing reports and support plans for a range of audiences. You must have a confident and consistent approach to directly supporting autistic people both proactively and reactively.

You will be required to provide practical support, illustration, mentoring and feedback to support teams to ensure safe and high-quality support is delivered, providing clear and consistent professional advice founded on evidence-based assessment and analysis, giving clear direction and guidance, often in times of distress.

The External Affairs Manager leads on our influencing work which is key to creating a society that works for autistic people and their families. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team in Scotland as a Policy and Public Affairs Officer.

The Policy and Public Affairs Officer will work to influence government policy and create positive change for autistic people and their families. The successful candidate will represent our charity to key government departments, Ministers and MSPs, and develop the strategic relationships we need to influence nationally, while also establishing local approaches. The Policy and Public Affairs Officer will also support campaigning activities in Scotland.

The successful candidate must have proven understanding of policy or parliamentary work, including knowledge of government structures and routes of influence. They must be comfortable analysing information, grasping complex policy issues and communicating these in an accessible and persuasive way to diverse audiences. They should be educated to degree level in an appropriate discipline or have a proven track record in the field. An understanding of voluntary sector and/or disability issues is desirable, as is a knowledge and understanding of campaigning methods.
