This will include ensuring that service providers are informed about problems with existing services and current examples of good practice which can be rolled out to other areas. That the process of involvement is inclusive and not detrimental to peoples’ health and welfare and that we can truly influence the services available in Lanarkshire.

Building on a history of vigorous campaigning against mental health stigma, and working in partnership with See Me Scotland and NHS Lanarkshire, the Stigma Free Lanarkshire programme is leading in the planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of an ambitious programme of change at local level here.

We are looking for an experienced, focused and motivated person who understands the issues surrounding mental health stigma and is passionate and serious about tackling it. As Stigma Free Lanarkshire Senior Development Officer you will develop, manage, and maintain key relationships with NHS Lanarkshire, See Me colleagues, and other key stakeholders, in the promotion and delivery of the project across four areas: health and social care, communities, the workplace, and education and young people.

In addition, embedding a rights-based approach, you will assist in achieving the project’s aims to create inclusive systems, culture, and practice as well as encouraging opportunities for contact between those who experience stigma and those who perpetrate it.

You are -someone who believes passionately in the power of the lived experience of mental health problems and in making recovery a reality. You should also understand the impact of stigma and discrimination associated with mental health problems and are serious about the need to challenge it.

Lanarkshire Links is funded across NHS Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Council with our focus being to support mental health service users and carers to be involved in the process of planning and provision of services.

This post is funded for two years with an option to extend to three years at the discretion of the funder. It is a new post to support the setting up a network with partnership agencies in North Lanarkshire, to support our core work and engage with ‘hard to reach’ groups within communities.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team of workers who are committed to promoting the welfare and advancing the education of people affected by mental health issues across Lanarkshire. We are a friendly team committed to supporting people with the lived experience back into the workplace.

You will join a group of four Peer Workers working across the adult mental health inpatient wards within the general hospitals in Lanarkshire. You will be line managed by Lanarkshire Links Development Manager and supervision will be available to you in your workplace. You will be part of the multidisciplinary team within the ward who will also be available for day-to-day support.

Lanarkshire Links has a long history of promoting Recovery and tackling the stigma that surrounds mental health and employ the Stigma Free Lanarkshire Project Team.

Peers are people who have a shared experience of mental health problems and recovery.

Peers can use this lived experience to help other people who are facing similar challenges.

Peers also use their expertise to inform the development of new policies and improve services by using their own lived experience to help design and deliver services. You will have the opportunity with the rest of the team to attend our quarterly members meetings where we support service users and their carers (our member) to engage with the statutory and voluntary sector service providers.

Applicants will use their lived experience and skills to work alongside the patient in the ward to enhance recovery throughout their hospital stay and on into the community.

When you commence employment, you will be provided with an orientation programme including the opportunity to work alongside one of the peer worker team.

You will have the opportunity to join monthly meetings with the full staff team.

You will take responsibility to complete training required for your role.

You will have (or work to gain) a knowledge of the Scottish Recovery Network Values Framework for Peer Working.

You will

  • Safely use your own personal experience to support someone’s recovery, offering hope and demonstrating a positive outcome.
  • Capture the patient’s experience of care as part of their journey of recovery from the patient’s perspective.
  • Contribute to discussions that will lead to self-improvement.
  • Build a therapeutic relationship with the patients.
  • Ensure a good working relationship with staff and partner agencies, promoting positive mental health, well-being, and recovery in your working environment
  • Provide 1:1 engagement and therapeutic recovery groups within the ward
  • Provide information and support in preparation for the patient returning home
  • Safely share you own recovery story
  • Act as a recovery champion within the team

Requirements:

Essential

  • Personal experience of mental health illness
  • You will be able to demonstrate what helped in your own recovery and what you do to maintain your own good mental health and well-being.
  • You will have effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to deal with challenging situations
  • Be competent in the use of Microsoft Word and Outlook

Desirable

  • A recognized qualification in a related field
  • A local knowledge of resources to support recovery in Lanarkshire

  • The Professional Development Award (PDA) in Mental Health Peer Support
