This is an exciting opportunity to join Sustrans as part of our Active Journeys team covering schools projects across Scotland, where you will help shape healthier, happier communities through walking, wheeling, and cycling.

As Project Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the design, delivery, and oversight of behaviour change and engagement projects, as well as leading and supporting the schools delivery team. You’ll be at the heart of creating positive change, ensuring projects are cost-efficient, timely, and impactful.

This role will require travel and work at various locations across Scotland as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans.

About you

You will bring a solid understanding of active travel and the barriers faced by communities experiencing inequalities, alongside knowledge or practical experience in behaviour change concepts and approaches.

You will have demonstrable experience in:

• Managing complex projects involving multiple stakeholders and partners, particularly those with a strong emphasis on community engagement.
• Project reporting and managing budgets.

You are a skilled problem solver with excellent organisational abilities, capable of managing and prioritising work across multiple projects to meet deadlines and targets.

With the leadership responsibilities of this role, you will be confident in your ability to:

• Lead and mentor colleagues, providing guidance and support both in-person and remotely.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment focused on shared success and continuous improvement.

About the role

We have a great opportunity for an experienced Engineer to join our team, working on projects which aim to tackle some of our most pressing issues such as the response to the climate emergency, unequal distribution and access to green space, social injustice of private vehicle dominance and the creation of equitable and enjoyable public space for all.

At Sustrans, our Engineers are involved in the design, delivery, and upkeep of active travel infrastructure in a range of urban and rural environments. Your work will include the management of design of highway infrastructure for walking and cycling, traffic-free greenways, structures over and under roads, rivers and railways and the management of path construction and improvement projects.

Candidates should be based within the geographical area with regular travel expected to a nominated hubs in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

About you

A skilled Engineer, you should have experience of providing technical authority and leading, motivating and managing a team.

You will be an excellent communicator, building relationships with ease across a wide range of people and backgrounds. You will use these skills to establish new business development opportunities, including identifying new projects, preparing bids, and developing relationships with partners.

We will look for evidence of your experience in dealing with the details of construction projects, through their full life cycle from conception to handover. You should be able to demonstrate leading on the production, review, and approving of engineering drawings and technical reports and have demonstrable experience in managing the delivery of projects, including resource allocation, risk management, and monitoring programme & budget.

As our Energy Development Lead, you’ll take forward FEL Energy Futures feasibility project that will design a community-owned energy generation and reinvestment model across Forth Valley, you will:

• Design: Lead the feasibility study for 2–3 renewable energy sites. Work with communities, councils, housing associations, and anchor institutions to co-create solutions that meet local needs.

• Test: Translate technical, financial, and legal assessments into a delivery-ready business case. Develop governance and reinvestment models that tackle fuel poverty, grow green skills, and strengthen resilience.

• Scale: Share learning with Scotland’s Climate Hub network and beyond—so our region’s progress can inspire and shape national practice and policy.

You’ll work closely with FEL colleagues, steering group, communities, and technical partners to ensure the project delivers on its vision of community-owned clean energy with real social impact.
