Role

The Scottish Association for Marine Science is an independent marine research organisation in the UK: one of the oldest in the world. We are located on a modern campus adjacent to the European Marine Science Park, on the peaceful Dunstaffnage peninsula, a few miles from the scenic coastal town of Oban (‘The Seafood Capital of Scotland’).

We are currently seeking a dynamic individual to run and promote our aquarium facility.

The Alan Ansell Research Aquarium sams.ac.uk/facilities/aquarium supports scientists and students from SAMS as well as commercial clients in research, teaching and development projects. The indoor facilities include an open plan experimental area, a mezzanine floor with a communications room, communal areas and numerous photoperiod and constant temperature rooms. Outside there are raceways and tanks. A seaweed hatchery is also integral to the facility. The Manager will assist in the design, development, setting up and running of bespoke experimental systems to conduct aquaculture or marine biology related research projects. SAMS Alan Ansell Aquarium holds a Home Office Establishment licence.

Job Purpose - There are two roles to the Aquarium Manager position: to maintain and support (with Facilities Team) a world class research aquarium facility and; to provide technical and practical support for aquarium based experiments to deliver SAMS research and commercial (SRSL) projects whilst also promoting the facility.

Attributes required - Knowledge of operation of marine aquaria. Willingness to continually develop and maintain knowledge of techniques for the cultivation of marine organisms. Maintain awareness of modern developments in aquarium technology and construction. Substantial experience in an appropriate working environment, either in a research or commercial context. Good IT skills and the ability to accurately complete documentation, records and reports, leading to scientific publications and commercial reports.
