We want to create a nation where walking is the natural choice for every day, local journeys; free from congested roads and pollution, reducing the risk of preventable illnesses and social isolation. Our Out & About project aims to improve the wellbeing of older people through walking. It will support people in later life to be more physically active through walking and creating new opportunities for increased social interaction. Critically the work will aim to empower older people to have more say in the planning, management, and maintenance of local streets and spaces that meet their needs.
Taking a partnership approach, our Project Coordinators will recruit and support Out & About groups of older adults, their supporters, service providers, and statutory agencies. Out & About groups will identify barriers to walking and public transport for everyday journeys and prioritise the issues that have the most impact on walking, isolation and empowerment. The post holder will develop and deliver a programme of activity in partnership with the groups including peer-to-peer support and walking promotion activities and better access to public transport and local services.
The post holder should have some experience of working with older adults and supporting agencies and services within a community setting, and previous experience in a community capacity-building. This will be a varied and exciting role and an ability to work independently and embrace a broad diversity of tasks is essential.
