Job description

The Caseworker works as part of the Scotland Directorate, providing specialist technical expertise on equality and human rights law in a Scottish context. The main aspect of the role is providing a Casework service but it will also include working on the Transfer of Expertise programme.

The Commission assesses cases where individuals have asked for assistance, to identify those which may be of potential strategic interest to the Commission. The Caseworker will work to source cases and investigate them, which will include working directly with individuals in discrimination and human rights claims. They will then assess the strategic merits of the case and provide a succinct and balanced report as to its strategic merit.

With a range of events and an eBulletin, the Commission’s Transfer of Expertise programme aims to raise awareness of discrimination and human rights law and build the confidence of advisers and other stakeholders to provide advice and representation. The Caseworker will be responsible for developing and delivering that programme, in a way which makes it as accessible and effective as possible. The Caseworker will also provide advice and support to advisors.

We are seeking to appoint an individual who is able to plan and progress work, with support from senior staff members, and ensure that deadlines and objectives are met. The successful applicant will have an understanding of equality and human rights law , and of the policy and legal background in Scotland, and will have experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders, including working directly with individuals, and of handling casework or investigating individual complaints. They will also have experience of developing and implementing or managing a programme of training or events or similar projects.

To be fully effective in this role you will be required to demonstrate our core skills of leadership, delivery management and stakeholder engagement as well as certain knowledge, skills and experience. You can find these on our website. Travel may be required.
