Role

Capital Theatres is embarking on an ambitious £25m redevelopment of the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh. The King’s Theatre is one of Scotland’s oldest and most loved theatres, over 200,000 people sit in its opulent, yet intimate, auditorium every year. It is home to Scotland’s biggest panto production with generations of the same families returning year on year. Each year it plays a pivotal role in hosting the Edinburgh International Festival, with visitors from all over the world coming to experience world-class performances. Now 114 years old, the King’s is in desperate need of a major redevelopment so that it can meet the needs and expectations of today’s performers and audiences.

Capital Theatres’ project will completely transform the theatre, creating a sustainable, modern venue which is an indispensable part of Edinburgh’s cultural offer. The redevelopment will celebrate the theatres rich history and period features and protect its use as a theatre for generations to come. As part of the capital project we have ambitious plans to engage people with the broad ranging social, cultural and architectural heritage of the King’s Theatre. We aim to build a multi-generational sense of ownership of the King’s Theatre, strengthening its reputation as ‘Everyone’s Theatre’, we want the King’s to be firmly rooted in its local community.

Our aim is to present and tell the story of the King’s using the performing arts as the vehicle by which to do so. We are delighted to recruit two exciting new roles – a Volunteers Coordinator and a Heritage Engagement Coordinator - made possible through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to help us do just this. These roles will join our existing Learning and Participation team which has a stellar track record in delivering learning activities to engage wide ranges of people with our venues and performing arts.

The role of Volunteer Coordinator will lead on the development of an exciting new volunteering programme for the King’s Theatre to celebrate and promote access to its beautiful heritage. In developing volunteer policies and procedures, you will create an important foundation to define volunteer roles in areas such as archive development, tour guiding, storytelling and events. You will recruit, support and train the volunteers and work with colleagues to create exciting opportunities for volunteers to get involved, learn and enjoy their roles. We are looking for someone who has experience of recruiting and managing volunteers, with excellent organisational skills and the interpersonal skills to interact with a broad range of people.
