Role

About the Royal Society for the Support of Women of Scotland (RSSWS)

The charity began life in 1847 to assist ladies of Scottish birth or education with particular backgrounds who were struggling to survive on low incomes and limited savings. In 1930 it received grant of a Royal Charter from King George V, becoming The Royal Society for the Relief of Indigent Gentlewomen of Scotland and it has evolved to meet the changing needs of society ever since.

At a meeting of the Privy Council in November 2014 Her Majesty The Queen approved an Order granting a new Supplementary Charter to the Society. When this came into effect on 1st May 2015 the charity acquired its new name (RSSWS), new charitable purposes and it adopted new, broader, admission criteria against which applicants for assistance are considered.

The Chief Executive leads a team of 6 (1 Senior Caseworker, 3 Caseworkers, 1 Office Administrator and 1 Caretaker) in the delivery of its mission to provide financial support to single women over the age of 50 who struggle to live on low income and limited savings. A charity established in 1847, but more needed and relevant than ever, RSSWS supports around 900 women on an annual basis.

The Chief Executive provides strategic vision and leadership, within the overall direction agreed with the General Committee of Management (the Committee), ensuring that the Society’s charitable purposes are followed.

Main Responsibilities:

· Work with the current staff team and Committee to effectively implement current and future strategy, delivering key outcomes in relation to the financial support of single women over 50 experiencing financial hardship.

· Overall responsibility for achieving, monitoring and reporting on performance against agreed goals and plans in all areas of the Society’s activities, ensuring the Committee is kept up to date and informed of progress.

· Work with the Committee and its nominated sub-committees to review and develop the Society’s strategy, in response to key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats with input from key stakeholders, developing new opportunities for the Society as appropriate.

· Formulate and monitor annual budget, income, expenditure and management accounts, produce regular financial reports, ensuring effective management and use of all resources, and prepare the Trustees’ Annual Report, and the associated annual financial statements.

· Ensure that a risk management policy is in place and that the risk register is maintained and reviewed, evidencing the Identification and management of the control of risks.

· Act as the point person for all data protection issues; ensuring ongoing awareness of issues and support the continuing framework for data protection compliance remains enforced and fit for purpose.

· Ensure that appropriate returns are made within deadlines to HMRC, Companies House, OSCR and other key bodies.

· Work with and support the staff team on the assessment and consideration of new applicants and reviews of existing beneficiaries, and lead on all correspondence with applicants and beneficiaries.

· Lead, manage and coach the staff team, providing supervision, support, development and annual appraisal to maximise their personal contributions.

· Ensure that the recruitment and deployment of the staff team is carried out effectively and efficiently in accordance with good personnel practice, and that all staff are respected, valued and safe.

· Advise the Committee in all aspects of leading the organisation, including short- and long-term strategic planning, financial sustainability and investment management, human resources management, and service delivery.

· Ensure the Society is presented in an appropriate and professional manner to its stakeholders, both on a day-to-day basis, and through the preparation of the Society’s newsletters and Annual Report.
