Top job! Head of Communications

  • Full time
  • £30,000 – £35,000
  • Edinburgh
  • Closing 1st November 2019

  • Advertised from 10th October 2019

Kids Operating Room is a global health charity focused on delivering safe surgical services for children in the developing world.

Currently working in 22 countries and committed to developing an ambitious program of growth across Africa in particular, but elsewhere too, we are seeking a Head of Communications to join our team, develop and deliver a Communications Strategy and ensure our profile is sustained across a number of channels and audience groups.

Our founders currently fund all of our work and will continue to fund our running costs as well as a wide range of our charitable activities. However, as we now look to grow our impact beyond this, and therefore our fundraising activities, we are looking for someone who can develop our public profile as a leading UK Aid charity, an organisation that can be trusted to deliver and an organisation that is making a very significant difference in low- and middle-income countries.

In time, the successful candidate will be able to build a team to help them achieve this but they will be expected to have experience in developing Communication Strategies, delivering success communications across a wide range of different media and of personally achieving objectives and delivering successful communications campaigns - both short and long-term.

Working closely with the Senior Management Team, you will direct our day-to-day communications but will also contribute to fundraising campaigns and build relationships with key media personnel, both in the UK and overseas, to ensure the sustainment of our positive profile.

Skills and experience:

  • You will likely already work in communications and be a high performing account executive (or similar) looking to step up into a more senior role.
  • You will focus on results - knowing the importance of every article, every social media post, every publication and you’ll have a track record of achieving exceptional outcomes.
  • You’ll be an excellent writer, capable of producing quality content for printed media and on-line use.
  • You’ll have a high degree of attention to detail in your writing.
  • You’ll be given control of our website and a budget to replace it.
  • You’ll be capable of delivering large projects like this on time and on budget and you’ll ensure the new site more accurately reflects our global reach and impact.

You will be degree educated and may well have completed further studies in Communications, PR or Media.

Role location:

The job is located in our Head Office in Edinburgh. Occasional travel elsewhere in the UK or abroad is expected.

A wide range of benefits are available to the successful candidate including private healthcare, opportunities to travel and a fully paid sabbatical after certain lengths of service. The salary applicable for the role is £30 - £35K per annum.

Application notes

Applicants should apply convincing us that they are the right person for the job.

You should showcase your skills in communicating and you should make it clear that you are the right person for us. We need to get our message out in a very busy world - you need to tell us you’re the right person for the job.

We look forward to reading, watching or simply seeing your application and to welcoming the successful candidate into our team.
