Humanist Society Scotland is looking for an experienced Finance Officer to join their small team based in central Edinburgh. Reporting to the Head of Operations & Finance, the ideal candidate will be a self starter, confident in making sure day-to-day transactions are recorded in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.

● Carry out key duties to ensure the charity's financial accounting, monitoring and reporting systems are accurate and up to date

● Produce accurate financial reports to specific deadlines, including the production of monthly I&E reports for the Senior Management Team and regular management accounts to the Board of Trustees.

● Monitoring cash flow, highlighting areas of concern with the SMT

● Assist with the preparation of annual budgets, providing sound advice to all cost centre departments across the charity

● Assist with the production of annual financial statements

● Assist in the development of accounting policies and procedures to ensure they are up to date and the financial control environment is appropriate

● Process gift aid claims, ensuring gift aid claims are compliant and seek to maximise the value of charitable donations to the Society

● Process VAT returns, ensuring VAT administration is compliant and partial exemption calculations are completed and reconciled

● Provide advice and guidance on HSS finance matters to all stakeholders including staff ,SMT, suppliers, celebrants and volunteers

● Oversee and assist with accounting entries to Xero, reconciling to source documentation and ensuring the ongoing systems of the finance team comply with best practice

● Maintain the purchase and sales ledgers, processing regular payment runs and carrying out credit control activities

● Ensure the Society complies with its payroll obligations including compliance with HMRC reporting, auto-enrollment and similar duties. Approve monthly payroll, processed by SCVO.

● Take on ad-hoc projects as required by the Chief Executive.


Proven experience of working in a finance role

Excellent knowledge of Xero and Microsoft Office

Solid knowledge of finance and accounting procedures

Confident at communicating to a wide range of people

Able to provide accurate and timely information to a high standard

Excellent time management skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously, meeting all deadlines

Financial qualification or part qualified

Experience of working in the charity/voluntary sector

Empathy with humanist values and Humanist Society Scotland’s charitable objectives.

Good working knowledge of SORP, charity law and VAT

Experience of CiviCRM or other similar CRM systems

Understanding of PAYE and employee benefits
