SAHA is a joint initiative of ten Scottish Higher Education institutions, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH). It was established in 2019 to promote the value of arts and humanities to society and provide a collective voice for the arts and humanities community within higher education. The strategic direction and activity of the Alliance is determined by a Steering Group comprising representatives from contributing organisations. The Steering Group now seeks to appoint a Policy and Communications Officer to support the development of SAHA’s strategy and to build and maintain our communications network and profile.

Reporting to the Chairs of the Steering Group (Professor Catherine O’Leary, University of St Andrews and Professor Murray Pittock, University of Glasgow), this is an exciting opportunity for a self-starter to help develop and embed the Alliance and work with leading academics working in the arts and humanities field in Scotland. The post is for two years in the first instance.

The successful candidate will be employed by the Royal Society of Edinburgh on behalf of the Alliance. The RSE, Scotland’s National Academy is an educational charity that provides public benefit throughout Scotland through a diverse range of activity including awarding research funding, informing public policy and delivering events across Scotland to inspire knowledge and learning. Working remotely, in the first instance, an office space at a member institution may be possible at a future date.

Key responsibilities:

• To provide day to day policy support for the Alliance

• To ensure effective communication of the Alliance and its outputs

• To provide logistical and administrative support

What we would like you to bring

The successful candidate will have an extensive knowledge of the arts and humanities landscape in Scotland, an understanding of policy and exceptional written and oral communications skills. Some prior experience in writing for a policy audience and using a range of media and digital platforms is desirable.
