At Aberlour we listen to understand what our young people want and need within our local area. As such, our new Options Fife - Housing Support and Options Fife - Residential Glenrothes services will support young people with learning disabilities and/or autism to live and thrive within the local community. We are looking to recruit Young People’s Workers to both of our new Options Fife Services.
Options Fife - Housing Support - Our new Options Fife - Housing Support service will be home to 4 young people aged 16 plus who will all have their own individual flat. Working patterns will include days, nights, weekends and public holidays. Our rota has been drafted with the needs of the young people at heart, shifts will be longer in order to keep consistency for our young people.
Options Fife - Residential Glenrothes - Our new Options Fife (Residential) – Glenrothes service will be home to 3 young people age 16 plus. Working patterns will include days, nights, weekends and public holidays. Our rota has been drafted with the needs of the young people at heart, shorter shifts of 7.5 hours per day is anticipated however this may change to suit the needs of the young people.
As a Young People’s Worker, you will play a fundamental role in our young people’s lives to ensure that they get the best possible experience whilst working towards goals in their care plan. Using a person-centred approach, you will provide enabling support ensuring the highest level of physical and emotional care; supporting our young people in their daily living and within the local community.
What will your day look like?
Like most homes, mornings can be busy. Ours usually begins around 7.30am just before our young people wake and are up choosing their breakfasts, as we help them make their plans for the day.
After having support with their personal care and medication, often it is some big decisions to make, about what to wear, how to wear their hair and what to plan for the food menu for the rest of the day.
As significant adults in their lives we use our skills and knowledge in creating timetables of activities and planned programs. We support young people to have expectations that we are listening to their views and what’s important to them.
The best part of our day is joining in with young people and sharing some flexible fun, such as playing games, watching favourite movies, nights out, bowling, crazy golf, special days out at the weekends to their favourite places and also seeing them enjoy spending time with their families.
Happiness and feeling loved is a key aspect of our care, as we teach young people to build upon their skills, focusing on their strengths and what they can do. We respect their values as we build upon their confidence through a range of interventions and creative activities which will enhance their self-esteem and how they view themselves even when days can be difficult and challenging for them. We work on developing a culture of shared language using a range of communication tools and creating calm predictable and structured environments, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
Like all young people, our young people have their own individual ways of doing things, have different interests and views, have their preferred way of making choices and their own unique ways of engaging and having fun whilst building trusting relationships and friendships.
When we finally get to bedtime and young people are settled for the night, that’s when we carry out some of our paperwork ensuring it reflects plans, risk assessment, personal goals and SHANNARI assessments.
What are we looking for?
If you have an interest in working with young people, we would like to hear from you. We are looking Young People’s Workers to work full time (37.5 hours per week), part time (25 - 30 hours per week) and relief. Ideally, candidates will have social care experience, understanding of autism, complex needs and disability. You will hold, or be willing to work towards, a relevant professional qualification at SCQF level 7 or above (for example: SVQ3 Care plus an HNC) together with relevant experience of working with children or young people. You must also be able to demonstrate awareness of the key elements of working with people affected by disability as well as an understanding of, and commitment to, young people’s rights.
