Established in 1995, the Foyer is a charitable organisation supporting people in the North East of Scotland towards independent living, learning and work. The Foyer supports young people and adults to deal with, and move on from, tough situations including homelessness, unemployment, mental illness and poverty. We start with people’s strengths, supporting them to build their confidence, develop their talents and make real and lasting change in their lives by:

  • providing young people who are homeless or at risk a safe place to stay
  • supporting people who are unemployed to learn new skills and move into work
  • engaging people through education and learning opportunities
  • supporting positive mental health and wellbeing

We deliver joined up services offering supported housing, learning, training, counselling, employment support and health improvement initiatives for young people and adults.

About Reboot Programme

Reboot uses a collective impact approach to improving outcomes with vulnerable learners in secondary education. It’s a four-year initiative which kicked off in March 2019, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. Through this initiative Aberdeen Foyer is one of a number of agencies working collaboratively to improve and better enable young people who are disengaged, or at risk of disengaging from secondary education. The purpose of Reboot is to improve attainment levels and transition to sustained, positive destinations for more young people. We are in Year 2 of the initiative and have a good level of engagement from key stakeholders. The project is at a critical stage of development and requires focused capacity to support its full impact.

Why we need this role?

We are looking for a multi-talented, multi-skilled individual with an inquisitive mindset who enjoys using creative and innovative solutions. The Reboot programme uses a collective impact approach underpinned by systems thinking. A key part of this is empowering communities and sharing narratives and perspectives. We are looking for someone to collate people’s stories, draw insights from them and share learning to inform systems change.

Reboot is at a pivotal moment; we are half-way through our four-year project. It is an exciting time to get involved and we are open to new ideas. The pandemic has increased opportunities for change and increased the momentum around improving outcomes for young people. As part of this we need to build our ‘brand identity’ to increase awareness of our programme and build on that momentum. Alongside sharing stories from key stakeholders with decision makers, we also need someone who can celebrate Reboot’s story and share successes and learning to inspire and motivate change.

About You

You’ll be a natural storyteller and enjoy using a wide range of platforms to share stories, including but not limited to websites, newsletters and social media platforms. You’ll have creative and digital skills that enable you to explore a wide range of communication methods such as visual methods (posters, videos), verbal (presentation, podcasts) and written (newsletters, social media platforms). Please note we have support from Foyer Graphics. We are looking for imagination and creativity with our communication, we can meet the technical skills elsewhere if needed. Experience supporting others to create communications content is desirable.

You will be responsible for:


  • Working with our Youth and Engagement Lead to gain the narratives from young people and communities to understand how they experience policies on the ground.
  • Supporting working groups to gain insights and learning which they can act on.
  • Identifying ways to promote a culture of learning within our partner organisations and internally.
  • Participating in reflective team sessions to promote internal learning.
  • Supporting the design and delivery of research projects.


  • Drawing insights from meetings with stakeholders, young people and decision makers and presenting these in a creative and accessible way.
  • Working with the Reboot team to use qualitative analysis techniques to draw insights from people’s stories.


  • Sharing narratives in a way that draws insights and highlights key concerns for young people and communities.
  • Working with our Youth and Engagement leader to support communication between young people, communities and working groups.
  • Identifying ways to continuously improve communications between Reboot’s partners to
  • promote collective impact.
  • Creating content for and managing Reboot website and social media platforms.
  • Create engaging and innovative ways to share narratives and perspectives between partner organisations.
  • Building the project’s ‘brand-identity’ and promoting the programme to build momentum.

Person Specification


  • Degree educated or significant professional experience.

Essential Experience, Skills and Attributes

  • Creative, organized, enthusiastic individual.
  • Understand the importance of narratives and why storytelling matters.
  • Experience carrying out life history or chronology work.
  • Able to translate complex and sensitive narratives into easily accessible stories.
  • Analytical mindset.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, influencing and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, confident adapting communication style to suit a range of communication needs.
  • Confident working with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience using a wide range of communication tools aimed at a range of audiences.
  • A natural team worker.
  • Competent IT skills and digital awareness.
  • Compassionate and able to empathize with people’s life experiences.

Desirable Experience, Skills and Attributes

  • Experience in coproduction and codesign with community groups.
  • Using creative ways to work remotely in an engaging manner.
  • An understanding of qualitative research methods and analysis.
