The Scottish Women's Institutes is an organisation which was founded in 1917 as the Scottish Women's Rural Institutes and recently modernised its image, its’ membership consists of 12,387 women across 599 institutes covering all of Scotland

As part of its growth strategy it is seeking to appoint a membership development officer. This is a crucial role for the organisation.


  • Follow up every on line enquiry into the office or sent to local regions. Persuade the prospective joiner of the benefits of membership
  • Develop and work through a highly targeted list of potential members, in gathered through promotional events.
  • Manage and develop the membership offer – working closely with the Communications Committee, President, CEO and Board of Trustees
  • Sustain and grow membership income levels against target. Help identify new and relevant income generating opportunities for the member reward scheme.
  • Promote the work of the charity at every opportunity or promotional event in collaboration with the Local Federation/Region

Additional key tasks within this role are:

The Opportunity

As a membership organisation, membership growth and engagement are crucial in the continued success of the SWI.

As the Membership Development Officer it is your primary aim to explain and engage with prospective members about the advantages of joining the SWI and its relevance to them while working with colleagues to retain existing members and provide a professional welcome to new members to the organisation

This important new role requires energy and enthusiasm as well as highly developed interpersonal, communication and customer care skills, together with strong networking & presentation capabilities.

The Candidate

Candidates will have a successful track record in retaining and building membership with related targets, combined with skills in building and maintaining customer relationships.

Essential Experience & Skills:

  • Proven track record in a membership role with related targets
  • Evidence of achievement of membership recruitment targets
  • Knowledge and experience of managing project milestones and deliverables
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication and customer care skills
  • Strong organisational, networking & presentation skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills suited to a wide range of audiences
  • Energy and commitment to achieve defined goals
  • Good team player
  • Competent in the use of IT systems in particular, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Competent in membership database management
  • Flexible approach to working hours (may include occasional evenings/weekends)
  • Ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and meet tight deadlines
  • Driving licence

Desired Experience & Skills

  • Strong digital & social media marketing skills involving use of Facebook, Twitter and Web Site maintenance, ensuring that corporate messages are cascaded to the membership.
  • Competent in the use of customer relationship management systems
  • A working knowledge of market research
  • Event management experience

The role will involve some evenings and out of hours responsibilities such as events preparation & support, event hosting/presentations/attendance and break down.

The Organisation

As one of the leading women only membership organisations in Scotland offering a variety of activities encompassing Education and Training as well as teaching a variety of craft skills to women from all backgrounds, we are involved in campaigning on issues that affect women.

The post would be on a full time basis although consideration would be given to Job Sharing. Whilst the place of work is Edinburgh based, the role allows flexibility to work from home with attendance at the Edinburgh Office as and when required.
