Who are we?

Deaf Action are a deaf-led charity working together for an equal and better future for all deaf people since 1835. We have a range of transformative projects and services which support our aim of improving the quality and conditions of life for deaf people in Scotland.

We have an exciting opportunity for a proactive individual to join our team as the Youth Service Coordinator. You will be someone with:

· A strong foundation and experience in youth work coordination and delivery

· A background in social work/care/science, CLD or professional youth work.

· Strong organisational, interpersonal and inclusive communication skills.

· A flexible and adaptive approach to service delivery

· The ability to manage both time and workload

· Strong IT and digital skills

· Strong leadership skills

· The ability to develop and maintain mutually beneficial working relationships service users and stakeholders

· A willingness to attend British Sign Language classes if you are not already proficient.

· PVG registration.

Purpose of the post:

To lead our Youth Service for young people (10-18yrs) impacted by deafness in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and the Scottish Borders.

Duties will include running weekly social activities, empowerment and resilience building workshops, encouraging the young people to develop a proud deaf* identity and organizing our annual residential camp. You will also be responsible for integrating our new youth development project into the Youth Service delivery program. The aim of this project is to work with deaf* young people between the ages of 10-18 who may be disengaged from learning due to the disproportionate impact online schooling has had on deaf* children during COVID-19. We aim to develop these young people’s life skills and increase their future employability through providing transition support to those moving from primary to secondary school, personal development and leadership workshops, a homework club, mentoring opportunities and supporting work placements.

deaf* is a general term to include Deaf British Sign Language users, deafened, hard of hearing, and deafblind people.
