Role

Passionate about social justice? Organising experience under your belt? Living Rent is looking for an experienced organiser to lead our staff team and grow the organisation. We believe in starting local, focussing on building up neighbourhood level branches of paying members that can then take on campaigns using a wide range of tactics including direct action.

We’ve already won major housing reform such as the private tenancy act, improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of tenants in Scotland. Alongside this, we have fought and won countless local campaigns to win justice for our members, whilst our recent work to support members during the Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated our ability to respond to changing circumstances.

We are looking for someone with previous experience of organising, who can demonstrate how they have grown an organisation and who has ideas for how they could support Living Rent build more power for working-class residents in Scotland. This post involves directly line managing the staff team, composed of field organisers and a member defence coordinator, training and mentoring them, liaising with the National Committee to implement Living Rent’s organisational goals, ensuring Living Rent’s financial health and developing a national organising strategy for Living Rent.

This post can be based in either Edinburgh or Glasgow with regular travel between the two cities expected and a degree of flexibility in working hours required.

Given the lasting impacts of the pandemic, an organised working-class is ever more needed. As a small and young organisation, you could have a massive impact of building the future tenants’ movement in Scotland and establishing it as a beacon for community organising around the world.

About Living Rent

Living Rent is Scotland’s Tenants’ Union. We seek to unite and represent all tenants whether you rent from the private or social sector. We are not affiliated to any political party and only answer to our members. We are ordinary people campaigning for better rights for tenants, protections against rent increases, evictions and poor-quality housing and we represent and defend our members when they are having housing problems.

By building tenant power and challenging landlords collectively, we not only win for our members but we also fight for a housing and political system that puts people before profit. We believe in the collective power of tenants to come together to fight for their rights, and use diverse tactics – including direct action when necessary – to achieve this.

Living Rent is affiliated to ACORN International and the International Union of Tenants.
