Role

Transform Scotland is the national alliance for sustainable transport. We campaign for a zero carbon transport network in which walking, cycling and public transport are the most attractive and affordable options. We are a registered charity, politically independent and strictly science-based.

We are now seeking a new Chair for our board of directors to lead us during an important time for transport in Scotland.

If you want to play a pivotal role in tackling the climate emergency, campaigning for a green recovery, and giving better transport for everyone, then this could be the role for you!

The role

First and foremost, we are looking for someone who can represent Transform Scotland to external audiences and act as a public face for the organisation. This includes being a spokesperson to the media and at public events, together with engaging with government, politicians and other external bodies.

The role will also involve: steering the organisation’s strategic direction; managing relationships with other board members; chairing board meetings (four times a year) and our AGM, and working closely with the Director.

Our membership of over fifty organisations is very diverse, bringing together everyone from passenger groups and environmental charities to major transport operators, local authorities and universities. As Chair of the Board you will get an unparalleled opportunity to meet and work with one of the most comprehensive networks of transport interests in Scotland.

It is likely that the role will involve a time commitment of two to four days a month. The successful candidate will also become a board member of Transform Scotland and will hold office for a three year term in the first instance. The Chair and other board member positions are not remunerated but all expenses will be reimbursed.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have the following personal qualities, knowledge and experience:

  • A strong commitment to sustainable transport.
  • Significant leadership experience (for example, experience of chairing a board and/or managing senior staff).
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Great communication skills, with significant experience in public speaking and/or broadcast media work.
  • Experience in a relevant or related field (e.g. transport sector, charity sector, public affairs and influencing, media).

We are committed to equality and diversity, and we encourage applications from anyone who meets the above criteria.
