Operations Manager

We are seeking a dynamic and effective individual with leadership skills for this post.

The purpose of the post is to enable delivery of high quality, effective and efficient services in accordance with Play Midlothian’s objectives, which ultimately enable children to thrive through play.

Please note that the appointment will be made to the first point on the salary scale.

About Play Midlothian

Play Midlothian is a registered charity (no. SC025474) working to support children to thrive through play. We focus on play because we know how much this benefits children’s health, wellbeing and development. It is important for their lives in the here and now as well as for their future life chances. We provide services for children and families and build the capacity of communities to support play. This includes training and development opportunities for other settings, including schools. We have an office base in Gorebridge but deliver services throughout Midlothian, and if commissioned, beyond.

About the role

Play Midlothian has grown in services, income and reach over recent years. Although the organisation is still small, we provide a complex mix of types of services. We also have plans to launch a new child mental health support service and expand our offer for disabled children in 2021.

We now need additional capacity to drive the next stage of development. The Operations Manager is a new post for Play Midlothian, and will be part of a newly formed senior management team, which also includes the new post of Business Development Manager.

The Operations Manager will largely be working with the birds-eye view of services, ensuring decisions made and overarching processes enable them to function well and be sustainable for Play Midlothian. Team Leaders, who will report to the Operations Manager, will manage the day to day practicalities of service delivery and line manage the Community Playworkers. The post also entails a development remit, steering and adapting services, and taking the initiative on proposing new services linked to strategic goals.

As this is a new post, developed out of an operational review, it is currently fixed term for one year. If the new staff structure works well for Play Midlothian, it is likely this would be extended. There may also be scope to grow the hours of the post as Play Midlothian grows and develops.

As we will soon be entering another phase of strategic planning, it is an exciting time to join the organisation, and play a significant role in shaping its future.
