Does supporting families to maximise their income excite you? Are you driven by a desire to make a difference to children with a life-shortening condition?

Children’s Hospices Across Scotland, better known as CHAS, cares for children with life-shortening conditions and their families. We operate through our two hospices, our network of staff in the community, hospitals, and our home care service in every part of Scotland. Some of the families we support experience poverty and hardship: caring for a very ill child often brings extra costs, and parents may have to give up work.

Three children die every week in Scotland from an incurable condition. Our doctors, nurses, chaplains and social workers support as many of those families as we can. We aim to reach every family in Scotland and have an amazing opportunity for you to join our team for up to 12 months to provide maternity cover, and develop a new service to help families with money worries.

As a result of COVID-19, now more than ever we need an adviser who can cope well under pressure, is able to keep up-to-date with changing benefit systems and be flexible to needs of our families.

Key Responsibilities

As our Family Income Maximisation Officer, you will:

  • Work with our team of social workers to develop a specialist money support service for families
  • Provide intensive 1-to-1 support for families
  • Work with our volunteering team, to grow a small pool of volunteers to help even more families

This is an excellent chance to use and grow your skills and experience in:

  • Providing advice to people who need it
  • Undertaking complex casework about benefits and money
  • Developing and motivating volunteers who want to do similar

About You

You will have specialist knowledge and experience in welfare rights or money advice, and a strong knowledge of the benefits system. Good customer service and communication skills are essential. If you are strongly motivated to make an impact for babies’, children, young people and families, we want to hear from you.

CHAS offers comprehensive work/life balance policies. This role would ideally be based at our Rachel House hospice in Kinross, but we are willing to be flexible (please note that many CHAS staff are currently working from home and it is likely this would be the initial arrangement upon commencement in this role). The role is being offered for up to full-time hours (37.5 per week), however we would consider part-time hours if that is preferred. Secondment opportunities will also be considered.
