The Advocacy and Campaigns Officer will assist the Advocacy and Campaigns Project Lead with developing and implementing Positive Action in Housing’s campaign strategy.
The post holder will work with Positive Action in Housing staff, volunteers, and clients to identify issues facing our beneficiaries and formulate effective campaigns to challenge the root cause of these problems at both the national and regional level. The postholder will work with other partner organisations to give sustained and consistent attention to policy developments, beginning with the Nationality and Borders Bill, and to formulate evidence-based responses. Key to this role will be lobbying MP’s and local authorities and build connections with other organisations with similar aims.
Current issues include the excessive length of time taken for asylum claims to be processed; unsuitable accommodation and support by the Home Office; lock change evictions; ineligibility for asylum seekers to enter formal paid work; differential treatment of refugees; asylum seekers having no recourse to public funds; inhumane detention in prisonlike accommodation centres; and the deportation of refugees to Rwanda. Positive Action in Housing has around 5,000 case referrals on our Advice Pro and REFER systems. Assisting the Advocacy and Campaigns project lead the post holder will use qualitative and quantitative methods to mine these databases to inform policy responses.
The postholders will work to strengthen our social media strategy to call attention to policy weaknesses and increase the impact of our engagement with the media and members of the public. We are looking for someone who is warm, positive, creative, and accountable with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with clients, staff, partner organisations, and other key stakeholders.
