Who are we?

Families Outside is the only national charity in Scotland that works solely to support families affected by imprisonment. We are dedicated to providing a range of practical, social and emotional support to children, young people and other family members with someone in prison. This support is relationship-based, prison-aware, and family-focused.

What do we want?

We are now recruiting for the three following posts:

• Support & Participation Coordinator (West) x 28 hours to cover Glasgow, W.Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire and N.Ayrshire areas
• Support & Participation Coordinator (North) x 21 hours to cover Perth & Kinross, Aberdeen and Inverness areas

Each Coordinator will be responsible for developing a wide-ranging support and participation programme, working alongside family members with a relative in prison. At a time of growth for our organisation this is an exciting opportunity to work in collaboration with a small team, with responsibility for delivering local, targeted support for wider family participation and engagement. The right candidate(s) will develop, facilitate and evaluate engagement with families, develop resources and materials, and support and manage volunteers.

With experience of working with children, young people and families in the community, the Support & Participation Coordinators will also have experience of planning and delivering group work, as well as the ability to work independently but also committed to working with and supporting others as part of a wider team.

Imprisonment can often have a huge impact on the things that matter most to families: money and secure housing, safe and connected relationships at home and in the community, and the emotional health and wellbeing of families. Families Outside is dedicated to providing a range of practical, social, and emotional support to people with someone in prison that are relationship-based, prison-aware, and family-focused.

As part of an exciting new partnership project with our colleagues at Barnardo’s Scotland, the Families Outside Family Support Worker will work to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people and their families in Edinburgh. We will address the social and family adversities that children and young people who have a family member in prison face to ensure they are safe, healthy, included, and achieving at home, school, and in the community.

Our Family Support Worker will:

• Support children, young people, and families at home and in their community via 1:1, family, and group work.
• Work closely with key professionals including prison staff and prison visitor centre staff to provide advice, information, and guidance to families and professionals on a range of issues.
• Support a caseload and address individual and family needs, referring to appropriate local services (i.e. housing, health, welfare) as required.
• Support families to be involved in relevant case conferences and decision-making fora where possible.

We are looking for a Family Support Worker who is:

• Experienced in working with and alongside children, young people, and families in creative and flexible ways
• Highly motivated and enthusiastic, but also passionate about developing and delivering quality, engaging, and fun activities that are accessible to children and young people across Edinburgh
• Confident in managing risk and ensuring children and young people are safe at home and in the community
• Focused on the rights of children and young people in their work and all they do
• Trauma-informed and understands the impact of imprisonment upon children, young people, and families
• Confident in working within GIRFEC approaches and is an effective contributor to multi-agency work with other professionals to meet the needs of children, young people, and families.

The Employability Advisor will be responsible to the Lanarkshire Services Manager and will work as a member of OPFS Lanarkshire Employability Service, to provide employability support for young parents living with complex needs and facing additional barriers to entering suitable employment, education, and training opportunities through one-to-one meetings and group work sessions.

About Aberlour Glasgow Intensive Family Support Service (IFSS)(City Wide)…

Aberlour are excited to announce that we are recruiting to our new Intensive Family Support Service. Aberlour will be working in partnership with the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership and other Third Sector providers to promote the wellbeing of children and young people by offering caring and responsive support, something which is now needed more than ever as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Aberlour Glasgow Intensive Family Support will deliver the support families need, when they need it. The aim of the service is to ensure that children and young people can continue to flourish at home, at school and in their local community.

What we are looking for....

As a Family Support Worker, you will work directly with families to nurture relationships, build on existing strengths and interests, help children and families build skills and confidence and strengthen community connections. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that works for a period of up to 12 months with families to support and enable positive change and improve outcomes. Our ambition is to help children, young people and families feel safe, confident, capable, and included, offering support when it is needed, including evenings and weekends. We believe in working alongside families, empowering them to lead positive change in their own lives.

We are looking for candidates who are experienced in working alongside vulnerable families to assess strengths and needs as well as plan, deliver and evaluate interventions and strategies which enable families to thrive. You will have experience of child and adult protection issues. Experience of working within other childcare settings such as Residential Child Care will be considered. This post is on a fixed term contract basis until 30 September 2023.

You must share our vision that collaborative working and relationship based early intervention is the best option for children and families who are feeling overwhelmed or excluded.

Ideally you will hold a relevant professional qualification at SCQF level 7 or above, together with relevant experience of working directly with children or young people and their families.

Not afraid to test new ways of working, you will bring a fresh, caring, and collaborative approach which recognises strengths and responds empathically to the needs of children, young people, and their families – this will include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

To succeed in this role, you will need to work flexibly within a variety of locations across Glasgow City, including family homes, schools, and community settings in line with Covid guidance and safe working practices.
