Role

We have recently been awarded substantial funding from the Corra Foundation to deliver Art Therapy services across North Ayrshire. Our Art Therapy services are designed for children who may be experiencing significant barriers to their personal and educational development and present: low self-esteem, anxiety, aggression, depression, difficulties making transitions and/or engaging with their peer groups both in and out of school. This funding has a particular focus on children and families affected by substance misuse/addiction. Our Therapeutic group work is delivered where common themes amongst groups of children are identified. A particular focus will be on those at risk of struggling to make a successful transition from primary to secondary school (a key reason for referrals into our art therapy service to date).

A crucial element of this work is to make sure this is a fun, positive and supportive experience and not a stigmatised ‘therapy’ group. The group work aims to support those displaying emotional, social and behavioural issues, and the development of positive peer networks/ relationships, whilst helping to instil social skills/ emotional resilience that will enable successful and ongoing integration with mainstream education.

The purpose of the Art Therapist post is to provide Art Therapy for children identified and referred through the Art Therapy Programme, to assess children for suitability for individual therapy/ group therapy and to provide therapy and psychotherapy interventions for children on a 1:1 basis or in groups of 4-8 children. Caseload numbers will be discussed with the Head of Service. We require a skilled art therapist who is experienced in working with this client group, of working closely with statutory services to provide holistic care and for whom following robust safeguarding procedures is of utmost priority. In return we offer a supportive and professional working environment with regular supervision from our Art Therapy Supervisor, peer support sessions and support & supervision from the Head of Service.

This fixed term post is for the North Ayrshire region and delivery will predominantly take place from our Irvine base and Primary schools across the locality.
