Westray Development Trust (WDT), a community-based charity, was established in 1999 with a mission to develop the economic, social, and cultural sustainability of the Westray community by harnessing the quality of the island’s resources, people, and island environment. Westray, located at the edge of the Orkney archipelago, north of mainland Scotland, is a thriving island home to approximately 600 people. WDT was established by and for the Westray community, and is remains managed by the community through it’s members and locally-elected Trustees.
WDT runs a successful series of grant programmes for the Westray community in addition to a community business loan scheme. Successful and ongoing WDT projects also include the Bayview Housing Project, the Westray Defibrillator Network, the Höfn Youth Centre, Bargain Box Community Fundraising Shop, and the Westray Community Garden. Job Description
The Operations Manager role is a key post within Westray Development Trust and is pivotal to the effective development of the organisation and delivery of services on behalf of its members and wider stakeholders.
WDT’s Operations Manager will be responsible for managing WDT projects and programmes, line managing office and project staff, engaging with and supporting the Westray community, and being the public face of the Development Trust. All in order to support WDT and the Board of Trustees in the charity’s mission to develop the economic, social, and cultural sustainability of the Westray community. WDT’s main income is from a 900KW wind turbine. An island conference is planning for early next year to decide the future priorities of the trust. The oppositions Manager will take the leading roll in organising the conference.
Hybrid working is possible with this post, however the successful applicant will be required to be, or become, resident in Westray. Evening work will be required as part of this role to meet with volunteers.

Your role will be to develop, implement and to deliver our Active Travel Hub and Weekend Events project and manage the staff team. This will include working with and alongside the community, community organisations and statutory bodies. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to lead and develop a team that delivers across three key Scottish Government programmes. The Technical and Outreach Manager leads a team providing specialist advice in person covering domestic renewables, help for landlords and affordable warmth services which are critical to the current energy crisis. This role is at the heart of helping Scotland to achieve its net zero goals through supporting domestic householders and landlords to take action and install renewable technology and energy efficiency measures across South East Scotland.
Over the last year, the Technical and Outreach Manager supported the team to save householders 116,034 tons of lifetime CO2 and £791,378 in annual fuel bills for fuel poor householders.
The successful applicant will join a motivated, skilled team with a focus on delivering an exceptional customer journey which starts with our advice team right through to an in-home visit and will identify suitable measures and potential funding on a tailored basis. You will be required to complete the City and Guilds Domestic Energy Assessor training and lead on the roll out of the SQA Home Energy Scotland Renewables training to all advisory staff.
You will inspire, empower and coach specialist staff to achieve challenging targets that support customers to take action, while developing projects that reach new customers and manage the overall demand for the team.
In return, we will provide the successful candidate with City and Guilds Domestic Energy Assessor certification, Historic Environment Scotland solid wall training and PAS2035 Retrofit Assessor training.
