We are currently recruiting an Active Play Project Lead to help us develop, deliver and expand the training and resource package that Actify provides as part of the Active Play programme.

The role

The Active Play Project Lead will be responsible for working with the Head of Training and CEO to develop and expand the Active Play programme across a number of local authorities in Scotland. This will require an energetic person who is motivated to work within a small but growing team, to develop and deliver consistently high quality training and support resources to nursery, school and community based staff.

The Active Play programme was conceived to address problems related to low levels of physical activity during childhood that lead to a range of preventable physical and mental health problems. Increasing children's physical literacy through play is a central outcome of the programme.

The programme has been in existence since 2011, consistently delivering positive outcomes for children in Scotland. The programme has been developed through a unique set of partnerships that brings together expertise in play, physical activity, policy, funding, training, research and evaluation.

The programme is currently delivered widely in Glasgow City Council primary schools with expansion into a nurseries and community setting in Glasgow and the Highlands planned for the 2022-23 school year.

Actify provides training and delivery resources for play workers, teachers, nursery workers and sports coaches who in turn deliver sessions to children aged 3-12 in a range of settings.

The Project Lead will work closely with Actify management on this next exciting stage of development for the project. They will ensure that it is delivered on time, on budget and to the highest standards possible. The Project Lead will also have opportunities to support the broader development of Actify’s training and technology work.

What does the role involve?

Active Play Training sessions and workshops

  • Lead the planning, delivery and evaluation of Active Play training sessions and workshops
  • Lead the development of new content and training material for Active Play
  • Work with colleagues to develop content on the Active Play hub on the Actify platform
  • Visit partner Active Play sessions and provide follow up support where required

Programme management

  • Work with Actify management to ensure that all programmes are delivered on time and budget
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with clients and partners
  • Lead on a range of administrative duties that support programme management
  • Liaise with Actify management to ensure that Active Play Training, Technology and Engagement work is well connected.
  • Support and manage the work of the Active Play Project Coordinator.

Programme development

  • Work with management to identify new ways to increase reach and impact of Active Play programmes.
  • Support and contribute to the development of new programmes.
  • Support and manage the work of the Active Play Project Coordinator.

Content development

  • Assess the need for new content and materials within the Active Play programmes and work with content teams to create new content plans.
  • Work with colleagues to produce new digital materials to support Active Play training.

Evaluation and learning

  • Design an appropriate evaluation model that can inform learning on the Active Play programme.
  • Lead on the gathering and analysis of evaluation data that can inform learning and development.
  • Develop an appropriate reporting system to share Active Play learning.


  • Work closely with Actify management to implement Active Play engagement plans and activities.
  • Work closely with digital colleagues to make best use of Active Play digital content in social media and digital marketing campaigns.

What skills and experience will you have?

Essential skills and experience:

  • Educated to HND/degree level
  • Experience of developing and delivering workshops/ training sessions
  • A passion for helping people achieve outcomes through sport and physical activity
  • Experience of leading / delivering and/or coordinating sports/ physical activity programmes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience of working closely with clients and partners
  • Experience of evaluation and applying learning
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Be flexible in your approach to work
  • A willingness to explore and develop new approaches
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent administration and IT skills (word processing, spreadsheets, cloud based email, calendar and contacts)
  • Be prepared to undergo a PVG check if required

Desirable skills and experience:

  • An interest in digital technology and its applications
  • Experience of working remotely and managing your own workload
  • Knowledge of digital media
  • Hold a clean drivers licence

The Actify base is in Glasgow city centre however we have been working remotely during the pandemic and will continue to make this part of our approach to work. When Covid-19 guidance permits, you will be out and about on a regular basis working with partners and delivering training sessions. This role will involve work in Glasgow and the Highlands and require some flexibility in working hours.
