The Role

Would you like to use your skills and experience to make a difference to a local charity who support the most vulnerable in our community? Aberdeen Cyrenians is looking to recruit new Board Members to oversee the strategic development of the charity as we move into our next phase.

We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who have professional experience in Finance, Marketing/Communications/Fundraising, Social Care and those with lived experience.

Our Board Members are both trustees of the charity and directors of the company limited by guarantee, so it’s essential that you are able to meet the requirements of those roles by:

· Being at least 18 years old

· Not previously having been removed as a trustee, or as a charity officer, agent or employee by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (“OSCR”) or the High Court due to misconduct or mismanagement

· Able to hold the position of Company Director and not having previously been disqualified

· Being of good financial standing and having no issues that would prevent appointment as a Company Director, such as undischarged bankruptcy or removal by Companies House

· Able to provide us with two references and to satisfactorily complete an enhanced Protecting Vulnerable Groups (“PVG”) check with Disclosure Scotland

· Share and work with our values.

Time Commitment

Our Board meet on the last Wednesday of each month at 4.30pm. The meeting lasts approximately two hours. A level of flexibility is required however, as given the nature of our work, there is at times urgent business that requires to be dealt with between Board Meetings which makes additional meetings necessary.

In addition, our Board operates two sub-committees: Finance & Investment and Regulatory & Compliance. There may be a requirement for new Board Members to join one of these groups, who meet on average once a quarter.

All new Board Members are required to complete our Board Induction within three months of appointment. This includes visiting all of our projects/services (some of which are open office hours Monday to Friday).

First started by Aberdeen University students as a soup kitchen, Aberdeen Cyrenians now put the needs of North East Scotland's most vulnerable and socially excluded people first — leading at the frontline of service, care and influence for 50+ years. Aberdeen Cyrenians work continuously to shift perceptions and change the outlook on homelessness and vulnerability in society — the reality often differs drastically from the 'labels' that people use when thinking of those who need support. Not accepting the current perception of homelessness is something that underpins Aberdeen Cyrenians' work. Our approach puts the reality of these situations front and centre. This reality reminds us that anyone can find themselves in difficulty, and Aberdeen Cyrenians exist to support anyone and everyone — whether they're living on the street, at high financial risk, in an abusive living situation, struggling with mental health issues, struggling with substance addiction or involved in the justice system. Our core values support a mission that prioritises close assistance, unique care and standing steadfastly by people in the midst of their most vulnerable moments.
