Strathclyde Students’ Union is the representative body for all Strathclyde Students. We have a rich heritage and a bright and exciting future. We are currently finalising our brand-new Union, a state-of-the-art facility at the heart of the campus and a key component of a world leading student experience at the University of Strathclyde.
We are excited to recruit a new Trustee to join our Board at this pivotal moment for the organisation. The Union strives to enhance the Strathclyde experience by promoting, representing and supporting students interests and welfare. Our diverse social, cultural and sporting opportunities offer all students the chance to thrive. We are dedicated to representing all 24,000 students at the University of Strathclyde. We ensure they are fairly represented and lobby on key issues to bring them to the attention of the University. Additionally, we run a range of commercial services from bars and coffee shops to merchandise and advertising.
We are currently seeking a board member with commercial expertise and finance skills. You should also have one or more skills in the following areas:
- Experience of strategic leadership
- Experience of financial management
- Experience of business and commerce
- Previous experience as a Trustee or other non-executive role
As a Trustee we will provide:
- Induction, training and reimburse all reasonable expenses
- Opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop your skills
- Opportunities to network with senior professionals
- Shape and improve the experience of Strathclyde students
The expected commitment is approximately one day per month and this would constitute up to six board meetings per annum (including at least one away day).
There are also sub-committees of the Board, including Finance, Audit and Risk, HR & Culture, Remuneration and Nominations committees. In addition, there may be other ad-hoc elements where trustees can be involved, including short-life working groups, playing an ambassadorial role and attending functions and events in their capacity as a Trustee.

The University of Stirling Students’ Union is a registered charity in Scotland (SC023788). We are an independent legal entity to The University of Stirling, but we work in very close partnership to ensure that the student experience at our university is the best it can be.
The Students' Union is entering a period of significant change as we look to build strong foundations and look to do things differently. A new strategic plan will be launched later in 2023 which will help shape our influence on campus and how we better support students.
To support us in this we are recruiting for an External Trustee to join our Board.

At the moment, our Trustee Board is made up of:
- Four elected Sabbatical Officers (full-time paid representatives)
- Three appointed current Student Trustees (volunteers)
- Four External Trustees (volunteers)
The role of a Trustee is voluntary with all reasonable expenses reimbursed. A typical year includes attending four in-person Trustee Board meetings (either full morning or afternoon) as well as supporting one of our sub-committees up to four times per year.

We are looking for someone with relevant experience to develop our academic representation system and energise student engagement with representation. The organisation is currently seeking multiple new Trustees to help it develop and realise a resilient and bold future plan, as it prepares for its next major application to principal funder, Creative Scotland.
Skills in marketing/branding; philanthropy; financial strategy; and corporate governance are particularly desirable.
The Board is also seeking to ensure it reflects the diversity of contemporary Scotland, and of SE's audiences; not all positions require previous board experience, and a full induction and training plan will be offered to all incoming Trustees.
