We’re looking for a Service Manager to join our amazing Midlothian Service. As the Care Inspectorate Registered Manager, you will have a lead role and the overall responsibility for the day to day running of the services. This is an exciting new post which means the right person will have the opportunity to play a key role in leading our pioneering approach to support in Midlothian.

The Service Manager will work across two services - Mental Health & Resilience Service and Park Cottage Service in Midlothian.

Mental Health & Resilience Service (MHARS)

You and the team will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, alongside Midlothian's Community Mental Health Team, providing a distress/crisis line, a single point of access to MHARS for residents of Midlothian. The Penumbra team at MHARS will respond to calls in a manner guided by the service principles, being inclusive, sensitive, and respectful.

From the moment Penumbra answer the telephone, we will listen and ensure that we understand the issues that has led to the person’s crisis or distress and provide an immediate response along with the support of the Community Mental Health Team establishing which is the best and most appropriate support for that person. By understanding each person's unique situation, enables a fast, tailored support and assists them to identify ways to successfully resolve their crisis and or distress and assists everyone to plan for their future.

Once the initial period of crisis has been addressed, individuals accessing the service will be supported to make connections to additional statutory or community support and/or deliver a Distress Brief Intervention (DBI) response to those in distress. This will involve community-based problem-solving support, wellness, and distress management planning, supporting connections and signposting for a period of up to 14 days. The service will be flexible and responsive, offering the mode of support that the supported person feels most comfortable with. People accessing this service will be supported by the team to establish and maintain a meaningful and fulfilling life in their community.

Midlothian Park Cottage

Park Cottage is a community based mental health rehabilitation service for up to eight people with complex mental health needs. Penumbra offer 24 hour tailored person centred support, supported living and community rehabilitation. Support delivered at Park Cottage may be practical and emotional to help individuals lead an ordinary and fulfilling life in the community. The time, length and areas of activity covered are different for everyone, but structured support can include help with budgeting, life skills, confidence building and social inclusion for approximately 12-18 months. You will support and lead the team at Park Cottage to work alongside the Community Mental Health Team as part of the Wayfinder Model, to work collaboratively to support each individual and their needs. The team at Park Cottage are flexible and responsive, offering the mode of support that the supported person feels most comfortable with. Penumbra will assist people using this service, to establish and maintain a meaningful and fulfilling life in their community.

As a Service Manager you will manage, support, and supervise a diverse staff team of Mental Health Workers and Practitioners to ensure the needs of people accessing support are met and the service provided is run effectively. You will provide leadership and management that supports the Midlothian Team’s understanding and promotes the service delivery requirements and the quality of service provided.

Are you a creative and motivated individual with the passion and drive to prepare and support people prior to a diagnosis of dementia to live well in their community?

If so, you can be part of a National Team of Post Diagnostic Support Link Workers (PDS Link Workers) providing high quality, person centered support to people living with dementia and their families.

This is a new initiative to provide pre-diagnosis support and advice to people and their family / supporters living with changes in cognition who are in the diagnostic process. This support will be delivered in a number of ways including face to face, groups settings and online.

Supporting our Edinburgh locality, the posts will be based in Edinburgh city. Alzheimer Scotland’s PDS Link Workers are required to be effective team workers and have the skills to build and maintain relationships with colleagues both within Alzheimer Scotland, the NHS, and other stakeholders.

Skills in using digital platforms are essential as we use a blended approach to support people that involve some virtual meetings and on-line groups.

Applicants must hold a recognised relevant professional qualification, have a good understanding of dementia and how it affects people and their families along with excellent communication skills, a warm flexible approach, combined with skills in empathy and relationship building.

In addition, you should have skills and knowledge at the Enhanced Level of the Promoting Excellence Framework or be able to evidence you are working towards its completion.

This post requires a full driving licence and access to a car.

At present, there are an estimated 8,464 citizens living with dementia in Edinburgh. Around 300 of these people are under the age of 65 years old.

Would you like to make a difference to the lives of younger people living with dementia in Edinburgh?

Supporting individuals to keep connected to their communities, engage in their interests and hobbies and access peer support, using your own car to help people get around (mileage and expenses are paid).

Successful applicants will have a positive approach to dementia. You will also have good communication skills and a caring attitude. A willingness to learn and participate in training is essential. Relevant qualifications and/or experience of working with people with dementia would be an advantage.

This position requires applicants to be registered with Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). And successful candidates are expected to hold or work towards a professional qualification (minimum of SVQ2).

Full driving license and access to a vehicle during working time is essential for this post.

The successful candidate for this post will be subject to a criminal check through Disclosure Scotland.

If so, you can be part of a National Team of Post Diagnostic Support Link Workers (PDS Link Workers) providing high quality, person centered support to people living with dementia and their families for a minimum of a year following diagnosis in line the Scottish Government’s minimum guarantee.

The aim of the PDS National Service is to enable people to live well with dementia and is centered around Alzheimer Scotland's 5 pillar model so that people move on to a period of supported self- management.

The model includes understanding the illness and coming to terms with the diagnosis, peer support, connecting and maintaining links with their community along with planning for future care and decision making to develop an outcome focused plan to support their future hopes, desires, and aspirations.

Supporting our Fife locality, the post will be based within the Dementia Post Diagnostic Support Service at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline. Alzheimer Scotland’s PDS Link Workers are required to be effective team workers and have the skills to build and maintain relationships with colleagues both within Alzheimer Scotland, the NHS, and other stakeholders.
