Congregational Support Officer

We have a varied and interesting opportunity for someone who is able to support our Presbytery and congregations with financial advice and training and also to assist with and oversee aspects of Safeguarding.
With understanding and experience of charity accounting regulations and budget and financial report preparation you will have a collaborative and personable approach to team working.
Your knowledge of current safeguarding legislation will support our local colleagues in sharing good practice and maintaining accurate records.
You will be able to work unsupervised and enjoy problem solving using your own initiative.
The successful candidate will be one of the key leaders in helping the Presbytery of Lothian and Borders to foster and sustain a culture of mission/growth. Please note this is a half-time post and it is the intention of the Presbytery to have two half-time Mission Officers.
Main duties will include
• To get alongside congregations and help the presbytery inspire them in their missional life
• To help Presbytery develop an understanding of contextual mission providing an appropriate balance between renewal and pioneering initiatives
• Feedback to Presbytery areas of missional need from congregations requiring support and resourcing
• To support, inspire, and encourage mission district and congregational mission activities
• To help to set up and inform the working of Mission Districts
• To train and support mission districts and congregations in their implementation of the five marks of mission
• To assist mission districts and congregations to theologically reflect on issues surrounding mission in 21st century secular Scotland
• To support Presbytery in the review of missional aspects of congregational Local Church Review Action Plans, advising on training and resources to help towards the achievement of goals
• Facilitate and assist in the development and ongoing implementation of the Mission Plan and Local Church Review
• To arrange gatherings to encourage networking, sharing of information and experiences and expert input on relevant mission topics
• To work with Presbytery in developing new models of mission/ministry for the missional context of today
• Liaise with Officers of the National Church, Forums, Committees, and agencies, as appropriate, to ensure that national projects and policies are effectively communicated with Presbytery
• To develop effective partnerships with other relevant organisations and to encourage such partnership working within mission districts; this could include other denominations, Workplace Chaplaincy Scotland, Fresh Expressions, FE Establishments, and relevant third sector bodies
We are seeking an accomplished professional to provide executive leadership for the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland.
The General Trustees hold in trust for congregations around 3,500 buildings including churches, halls and manses, and approximately 13,000 acres of agricultural land spread throughout Scotland. They also have significant investment holdings most of which are also held for congregations. The staff of the General Trustees provide advice to congregations on repairs and maintenance, purchase and disposal and health and safety issues relating to these properties.
In recognition of the Church estate requiring rationalisation and improvement, we now seek a Chief Executive who will assist and guide the Board and provide staff leadership in supporting congregations in achieving the vision of ‘well equipped spaces in the right places’. This is a key element in the strategic plans of the General Trustees and the wider Church.
We have an exciting opportunity for an individual who is willing to help encourage and support mission focus within Presbytery and its congregations.
With an understanding of missional approaches and the challenges of developing a mission focus in the local church within the context of the Presbytery Mission Plan, you will have a vision for how the Presbytery could form operational practices to better engage with God’s Mission through Jesus Christ.
We are looking for a strategic thinker with excellent organisational and communication skills and who is a committed Christian, with a live church connection (This is a Genuine Occupational Requirement in terms of the Equality Act 2010).
