Background information

The Welcoming Association is a charity that works specifically with New Scots (asylum seekers, refugees and migrants) in Edinburgh. We won the 2021 Ashden Award for Greener Communities, and three of our volunteers also won prestigious prizes at the Inspiring Volunteer Awards 2021.

Purpose of the role

This postholder will work in partnership with Project Scotland to deliver the ‘Inspire’ project from April 2023 to May 2024. The project aims to help Young New Scots (18-35 years old) by providing self-management and social intelligence classes, volunteering opportunities and mentoring.

Although the project will work in partnership with Project Scotland, which has a base in Dundee, the post holder will work from The Welcoming’s office on 20/1 Westfield Avenue, Edinburgh, EH11 2TT.

This is a fixed term role available from now, funded until the end of March 2024 pending further funding post this date. You will be based in central Edinburgh with travel throughout our region. We are also accepting applications on a secondment basis.

The role is classed as ‘Regulated Work’: a Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) membership is required (application to the scheme may be made by us upon conditional offer of the post).

Main Purpose of the job

To provide capacity building and infrastructure development support to ethnic minority (EM) third sector organisations in the Glasgow City Council area.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• To work with EM organisations across Glasgow and provide infrastructure and capacity building support based on their need.
• To use the CEMVO Scotland diagnostic toolkit (DTK) to conduct an initial analysis of the organisation producing a report with recommendations to further capacity.
• To co-produce an action plan based on priority areas and execute the action plan with the organisation
• To evidence and collate a ‘portfolio’ for each organisation to document their journey.
• To provide appropriate training based on need to further the organisation’s capacity
• To attend networking meetings and strategic development forums to ensure issues facing EM organisations and communities are highlighted
• To develop close working links with funders, statutory and public bodies to identify opportunities for ethnic minority third sector organisations to attract funding.
• To contribute to monitoring and evaluation processes to ensure that the capacity building programme is running to schedule and meeting targets.
• Provide regular project progress updates to line management.
• To encourage co-operative and joint working within the EM third sector and to work with organisations to assist them in promoting good management practices.
• To contribute to the development of the CEMVO Scotland third sector databases as appropriate.
• To work evenings and weekends on an occasional basis as required.
• To undertake such other relevant duties as may be required from time to time and which are compatible with the main purpose of the post and its level of responsibility.
• To provide regular and end of year reports to the line management and to funders when requested

Person Specification

Essential

• Knowledge and at least 2 years’ experience of providing capacity building support within the third sector – such as business planning, marketing, funding application support, robust financial systems, good governance.
• Good communication and inter-personal skills
• Good written communication / report writing skills
• Experience in designing and delivering capacity skills training in good governance, business planning and marketing
• Knowledge and experience of the funding arena in Scotland and experience with submitting project proposals to funders
• Excellent self-management skills, working to tight deadlines, demonstrable experience in managing a portfolio of clients/organisations over a period
• Commitment to the development of the ethnic minority third sector, as well as a good understanding of race equality and issues affecting the sector
• Ability to network and advocate for EM communities and organisations
• Successful track record of achieving positive outputs in managing projects
• Good organisational and IT skills

Desirable

• Proficiency in using online meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

We seek an experienced outdoor and multi-skilled senior youth development worker to support our Youth Vision team. This exciting post offers a unique opportunity to work with vulnerable young people in the nature-based informal education setting of our 18th Century restored farm steading in the Pentland hills. You will have experience of project management and lead facilitation with vulnerable young people, staff, and volunteers in the outdoor environment.

Working alongside the field manager you will support, develop, and run our programmes at our Steading and within the community. Experience of supporting funding strategies would be desirable.

The Role:

Support and work alongside Field Manager running and supporting all projects.

Responsibilities:

• Planning, organising and running groups at Threipmuir farm steading as well as in the community.
• Managing and supervising the facilitators and volunteers.
• Managing the evaluation of the projects, measuring, and disseminating the outcomes.
• Support staff in current funders and feedbacks.
• Producing monthly progress reports and attending appropriate meetings.
• Overseeing the delivery of outcomes, tracking of achievements and progression of young people, facilitators, and volunteers.
• Supporting Youth Vision’s Policies including child protection, safeguarding and risk assessment.
