Role

About SAMH

SAMH is Scotland’s national mental health charity. We have represented the voice of people most affected by mental health problems in Scotland for almost 100 years. Today we work with adults and young people, providing mental health social care support, services in primary care, schools and further education, among others, in over 60 communities. SAMH manages an annual budget of £20M with 550 staff.

We use this experience to influence our effective policy, campaigning and fundraising activities which deliver social change alongside national programmes See Me, respect me, suicide prevention and active living. SAMH is dedicated to mental health and wellbeing for all with a vision of a society where people are able to live their lives fully, regardless of present or past circumstances.

It is an exciting time to apply to join us. We will be celebrating our centenary next year and are in the early stages of implementing our bold and ambitious “We Won’t Wait” strategy. We are committed to ensuring our services are relevant to everyone in Scotland and wish to strengthen the diversity of voices around our board table to enhance the nature and quality of our decision making and ensure our services are relevant to all.

About the role

You will be joining an experienced board of Trustees who welcome sharing that expertise with those with less experience and learning from those who bring different professional skillsets.

SAMH Trustees oversee the strategy and governance of SAMH to ensure that the charity is run in the interests of the people they serve and supports Scotland’s mental health.

As a SAMH Trustee, this voluntary position is responsible for the overall leadership, strategy and direction of the charity, contributing to the development of the work, promoting SAMH and mental health, contributing to effective governance and ensuring compliance with the legal obligations of Charities and Charity Trustees.

Further information on the role responsibilities can be found on the role profile which can be downloaded below.

What we are looking for

We are looking to recruit trustees who share our passion for the mental health cause and who have the commitment, passion and desire to help us achieve our ambitious strategy and serve and improve the lives of people with mental health problems.

We are interested in either experienced or first-time Trustees. However, your commitment to our cause, your passion for our mission, vision and values, and your potential to make a valuable contribution to our development will be key.

Currently we are looking for individuals who are familiar with scrutinising reports and consultations, leading discussions and attending working groups.

At SAMH we are currently, but not exclusively, looking for people with experience in at least one of the following areas:

• Mental health / psychological wellbeing

• Business

• Third Sector leadership

As an organisation we are committed to promoting equality and diversity throughout the organisation and aim to represent the communities we are here to support. We would like to have a truly diverse organisation – diversity of thought, background, experience and of all protected characteristics. In line with our core purpose, we would like to increase the representation of the mental health inequalities that exist for communities of all ethnicities. We therefore particularly welcome applications from minoritised individuals and from people who may have experience of mental health difficulties directly or indirectly. SAMH is a Disability Confident Employer and we encourage disabled applicants to apply. Disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria will be guaranteed an interview.

What we will provide for you

We will support you with induction and development opportunities, including helping you gain an understanding of SAMH, mental health, the role responsibilities and liabilities of a Charity Trustee, and opportunities to visit SAMH workplaces to meet with staff, volunteers and people we support. For first-time trustees buddying \ mentoring from current trustees could be provided.

We will also reimburse your travel costs.
