About the Role:

Support in Mind Scotland provides support throughout Scotland, and offers a range of services to people directly affected by a mental health issue and to those who care for them, whether family, friend or supporter.

Our Carers’ Support Service in Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway are looking for someone with a passion for supporting carers and family members of people living with mental illness, who is looking to use their skills and experience in Health and Social care to make a positive impact on Carers and their caring role.
In this Carers Support role, you will be responsible for empowering carers by encouraging and enabling them to focus on their own health and wellbeing. You will do this by working with them on plans and strategies to manage their lives and cope with their caring role.
The expected outcomes for Carers include:
• Carers are able to access the services they need to continue in their caring role
• Carers are able to access planned short breaks when they need them
• Carers have maintained or improved their level of health and well-being
• Carers receive the information and advice they need when they need it
• Carers feel supported in their caring role
• Carers are actively involved in the planning and delivery of the service they receive
You will provide emotional and practical support, help to raise carers awareness of their rights and of support packages available to them, signpost and refer them to various agencies, charities and services that they need.
You will facilitate a safe and appropriate space for peer support and empower carers by giving them access to information relevant to them. This can be through online groups as well as building-based spaces when restrictions allow.
Who are we looking for?
You will be empathic, a good listener and possess a clear understanding of the issues faced by carers. Knowledge of specific legal issues faced by carers of people living with mental illness is highly desirable.
You will be comfortable working in a team or lone working with carers to meet their needs, and be confident using Microsoft packages, such as Teams, Spreadsheets and online communication platforms such as Zoom.
A good working knowledge of mental ill-health is essential, as well as the ability to provide one-to-one support and facilitate group support.
