Acorn Project - Continuing care and learning at Harmeny
Harmeny Education Trust is a sector-leading children’s charity providing therapeutic care and education for children with complex additional support needs. We currently work with children of primary up to early secondary stage, both on a day and all-year-round residential basis.
Harmeny is situated in a beautiful 35-acre woodland estate, which includes residential and education accommodation, community garden, orchard, wildlife habitats, children’s play areas and a mountain bike track. Harmeny is located in Balerno on the outskirts of Edinburgh, at the foot of the Pentland Hills; we are easily accessible by bus and there is ample parking.
Acorn is an ambitious programme aligned to our Strategic Plan, which will support the continuing care and learning services for young people, aged 15-18 years. We are committed to reducing transitions for young people, in line with The Promise and continuing care legislation. Initially, this service will grow with young people already living with us, aged 12-14 years, to allow them to continue their care and education at Harmeny.
We are at an exciting stage in this journey, which we aim to open in Summer 2022. The older age group will be care for within a nurturing and homely five-bedded residential cottage, which is currently being refurbished and extended to meet their needs. There will be a high level of engagement and participation with the young people. We are also designing a bespoke secondary curriculum, centered around employability and enterprise and also supporting attendance at mainstream schools.
We are currently looking to create a new, dynamic care team to support the transition of the young people and support their continued growth and development. We are keen to draw on the skills and knowledge of those who have experience working with the older young people, or are keen to do so. The post-holders will contribute to a culture and ethos in which we make the needs of the young people paramount and provide them with security, safety, care and social development to enable them to reach their potential.
We are looking for an Assessment and Planning Worker to join our Care Team on a full-time employed basis. Candidates will be expected to lead on the consistent assessment and planning work for all children within the cottages, and to maintain and build on the excellent standard recognised through care inspections. The post-holder will support the Care Management Team to raise awareness, understanding and upskill the Residential Care Teams in the assessment and planning process.
Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to gather and summarise complex information and write in a well-structured, transparent way. A relevant qualification in line with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) requirements for Residential Child Care Workers and experience of working with children with additional support needs are essential requirements for this role.
Candidates will be required to safely drive children and staff to and from outings, activities and external meetings via fleet vehicle; as such a driving licence is essential.
The post-holder will be required to work 39 hours per week, working five days from seven, according to a rota system. Evening and weekend work is required.
Successful applicants will be required to join Disclosure Scotland’s Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme and register with the SSSC.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to join an established and successful organisation. The post-holder, together with colleagues in Care, Education and Support Services, will have the opportunity to contribute positively to the lives of some of the nation’s most vulnerable children, ensuring that Harmeny continues to offer an excellent service.
