Please Note: We are holding an information session for anybody interested in applying for the role to find out about the role of a rehab worker and the university program on Thursday 13th January from 6 - 7.30 pm. We will have recently qualified rehab workers and our team manager on to answer any questions or queries you might have. As a Trainee Orientation and Mobility Specialist you will contribute, as a full-time member of staff, to the services delivered by the Scotland Team whilst successfully completing all elements of the 2-year Apprenticeship Training programme in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment). We are keen to hear from candidates living in the central belt area.
The content of the apprenticeship will be covered through a mix of on the job, and off the job training.
On the job training will be provided by Guide Dogs as part of the job role of Trainee Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Off the job training will be delivered by Birmingham City University (BCU) key details of which are below.
Birmingham City University Course key dates
Application deadline date (if successful, applications must be made to BCU by this date): 21st March 2022
BCU Assessment dates: week beginning 4th April 2022 at BCU
Course dates: BCU Starting in September 2022, 2-year course.
Successful applicants will be required to apply to, and be accepted by, Birmingham City University for the Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment) – FdSc course. The applications need to be submitted after a job offer has been made and accepted, and before to increase chance of gaining a place on the course. Places on the University course are limited for the September 2022 start date, and offers will be made on a first come, first served basis. Positions are not held back for Guide Dogs employees.

We are looking for a fun, creative, enthusiastic team player who is highly motivated to plan and organise exciting sporting opportunities for veterans with sight loss. You will have experience of facilitating groups with the ability to build rapport quickly and be an effective networker.
You will have a passion or interest in specific sports or physical activity with a desire to motivate individuals to get more active. You will be willing to travel to engage with veterans and other organisations to increase access to sporting opportunities across Scotland.
You will work to increase access to sporting opportunities within veterans own local communities, building upon the comradeship that the veteran’s community often enjoy. The role will be key in identifying sporting opportunities and developing partnerships that veterans with sight loss can engage with, ensuring accessibility and supporting participation in these. Another key part of the role is building positive and sustainable partnerships that benefits veterans and their families within their local areas. The job also involves recognising and supporting the organisation with other events/activities that may encourage social and peer support opportunities.

What this job is about:
This job is important to us, as it aligns with the Charity’s aim to create and support accessible opportunities for veterans with sight loss, who access our activity hubs.
The key aspect of the role requires you to be responsible for safely transporting veterans with sight loss, to and from the activity hub. Our driving team play a huge part in ensuring that the veterans can attend the Activity Hubs and are times required to provide some support to ensure veterans can access the vehicles. The role will require an adherence to health and safety with regards to routinely checking the fleet to ensure there are no issues, and reporting this to the leadership team.
As the welcoming face of Sight Scotland Veterans, you will often be the first contact the veterans have each day, and as such are an important representative for the organisation. The veterans enjoy chatting with the driving team whilst on the vehicles and a welcoming and friendly personality is an asset within the role.
What we want you to be responsible and accountable for:
- To be responsible for safely transporting veterans in the minibus or car to and from the Activity Hub or other locations, as required.
- To undertake any driving duties necessary to the functioning of the organisation as agreed with the Deputy Manager.
- To take responsibility for Health & Safety in relation to the minibus or car including ensuring, that all passengers use appropriate seatbelts / restraints during all journeys and that all passengers are assisted in a safe fashion when boarding / exiting the minibus or car.
- Ensure that the minibus or car is driven with due care and attention in accordance with current road traffic legislation.
- Take responsibility for the routine maintenance of the minibus or car, including cleaning the vehicles and ensuring the Deputy is informed as soon as possible of any problems in relation to the vehicles.
- Ensure all wheelchair clamps are present and functioning in the minibus.
- Any other reasonable driving or ancillary duties that may be required.
The current duties of the role require a criminal records check or membership of the PVG scheme through Disclosure Scotland.

School Based Residential Care Worker

This is a term time role
As part of the care and school staff team you will support the coordination and delivery of the learning and care of children and/or young people with a range of visual impairments and additional complex needs in different learning and care environments by providing a safe and high-quality environment in which children and/or young people will thrive.
You will work collaboratively with the multi-professional team within the learning and care provision and colleagues across Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans.

The Chef is responsible for planning and preparing a varied and nutritious diet for service users attending the Centre in a welcoming and safe environment.
The Chef leads the kitchen team and works alongside the Deputy Centre Manager to ensure all menu items are prepared within budget as set.
What we want you to be responsible and accountable for
- Provide high quality food for service users within the agreed budget
- Plan menus in conjunction with management team and taking into account;
- Specific dietary requirements
- Specific cultural requirements
- Direct and deploy staff in preparation and serving of the menu offering.
- Provide training to expected standards and quality of general food preparation, cleaning, health & safety requirements, particularly regarding the operation of equipment, and Food Safety
- Source, order, receive, and check quality and invoice of stock.
- Prepare and cook meals on a daily basis.
- Ensure all recipes are up to date and being followed by staff.
- Ensure proper storage and labelling procedures are followed.
- Maintain cleaning schedules.
- Liaise with manager/ deputy manager with regard to any additional catering requirements such as for large meetings or functions.
- Ensure Food Hygiene and Health and Safety recommendations are complied with.
- Ensure all Food Hygiene and Health and Safety records are completed and accurate
- Report any malfunction of equipment or fittings that require maintenance or cannot be kept to standard through normal cleaning procedures.
- Attend appropriate service user consultation meetings.
- Lead, direct and train kitchen staff
- Participate in the selection, appointment, induction and training of catering staff.
- Deal with unsatisfactory performance and conduct of staff.
- Participate in setting and monitoring appropriate performance objectives and standards for staff through probation review and appraisals.
