Role

About SuperTroop

SuperTroop is a registered charity (SC047109) set up in 2017 and based in Edinburgh. We provide week-long residential holidays for children and young people with learning disabilities. We are an almost entirely volunteer-run organisation that provides 24/7 one-to-one support for holidaymakers and offers a wide range of activities on-site and through day trips in the local community. Our SuperTroop pledge is that our holidaymakers should be: Safe, Happy, Respected and Nurtured.

SuperTroop is still a relatively young charity, however we have big ambitions to expand our provision to give the SuperTroop experience to many more children and young people across Scotland. In fact, having run three hugely successful holidays to date, the Board is about to embark on a programme of strategic development to ensure its long-term growth and sustainability.

“SuperTroop is an inspiring charity to work with. The energy and enthusiasm of the team and the opportunity to help grow an organisation that delivers such valuable projects make being on the board really rewarding” (Jenny Martin Nye, Chair of SuperTroop’s board of trustees).

Are you interested in joining us at this exciting juncture, or do you know someone who would be?

We are seeking to appoint a new trustee to support us as we continue to grow and thrive.

What we are looking for

We are looking to find a dedicated individual, who shares our passion to provide magical holidays for disabled children and young people and is willing to give the necessary time and effort to contribute to strategic planning and support excellence in learning, development, delivery and training.

We encourage applications from members of groups currently underrepresented in Scottish third sector leadership.

Skill set

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with the following backgrounds or experience:

- Experience supporting people with learning disabilities

- Professional experience in a residential care setting

If you don’t have specific skills and experience in the areas of learning disabilities/residential care, please still consider applying. If you are enthusiastic, committed and have a valuable set of skills to bring to the board, you still might be the right person for us.

We have a supportive board environment, so if this is your first time putting yourself forward as a charity trustee, this could be the right place for you. The new trustee will be given induction and ongoing support necessary to be able to fully contribute to the board and it’s decision-making.

Time commitment

As a minimum, Trustees are expected to commit to:

- Frequently attending board meetings, of which there are approximately four per year (on a weekday evening, typically for 2 hours). Meetings are currently held online.

- Attendance at our AGM

- Attending infrequent development or strategic planning sessions (usually no more than once per year)

From time to time, other short life working groups may be established by the Board to progress particular pieces of work. In addition, individual trustees may agree to work closely with member(s) of the holiday volunteer team on a specific issue, depending on their own skills and areas of expertise.

More widely, trustees are expected to advocate on SuperTroop’s behalf using a wide range of networks.

Trustees will normally serve 3-4 years. Trustees can stand for re-election at the AGM.

Expenses

This is a voluntary, unpaid role, however any reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred as a result of you carrying out your role as board member will be reimbursed.

Application notes

If you think you could help us then we would love to hear from you. To apply, please complete the following online form. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GJ3S8G3

The successful applicant(s) will be initially co-opted to the Board and then confirmed at the AGM.
