Stand Alone Charity is looking for a dynamic new Chair for our Trustee board. This an exciting opportunity to join a small yet powerful charity making a huge impact in policy and practice for people estranged from family.

Who are we?

We're an awareness raising charity, supporting people of all ages who have no contact with their family or a key family member. We work alongside many different partners to improve recognition and support for some of the most vulnerable people in our society. We put an emphasis on generating research and awareness on family estrangement and disownment, working in policy, press and building innovative national support services for those who are living in society without the support of a family network. We have made a significant difference in the first decade of our work and have successfully changed large areas of public policy in England and Scotland for estranged young people accessing education.

We are looking for a Chair with senior management experience in the charity, higher education or private sector. Experience leading a board as Chair or Vice-Chair is preferable but not essential.

We are looking for a new Chair of the Board of Trustees

We want recruit a Chair for our board of Trustees with experience of senior management at Director or CEO level. You could have gained this experience in any sector relevant to our work: the charity sector, HE sector or the public sector. If you have previous experience of acting as Chair on a charitable board, we would very much welcome your application.

In this voluntary role, you would work closely with the CEO and the board to advocate for the charity in meetings and events, and support the Chief Executive.

We want to recruit a Chair who understands our organisation and its importance, who is passionate about our cause and proud of the progress and strong impact we have made. We want to recruit someone who is able to help us make key decisions in terms of the expansion of the charity and new areas of growth.

What are we looking for?

We would like you to be a true team player, a willing volunteer and someone who is not scared to add ideas and thoughts to a conversation, but who can also listen as much as they can contribute. You value openness and empathy in communication and are experienced in collaborative decision-making.

It's crucial you understand and are passionate about what Stand Alone does, and think freely about social issues and family breakdown. We don't encourage a blanket bias towards reconciliation when it comes to family breakdown, and allow people to make the decision around what is best for them with their situation.

What difference will you make?

You will be responsible for the board of Trustees and the effective governance of the charity and its activities. You will work with our dynamic Trustee board, our founder Dr Becca Bland, and our funders and stakeholders to ensure our charity continues to create meaningful impact for its beneficiaries. Managing risk, and will have a key role in ensuring we are able to grow sustainably, develop and reach people who are in need of our support and inclusion.

What's in it for the volunteer?

You would be part of an innovative, forward thinking and highly impactful organisation, focussed on reaching those who have no contact with their family or a key family member. Our beneficiaries are people who so often slip through the net and who have no place to turn.

You would lead a supportive, engaged and lively team of Trustees, who enjoy each other’s company as well as helping the charity to grow and create impact. You will have the opportunity to recruit new Trustees as those longest serving stand down. Stand Alone has spent a decade successfully raising awareness; you will be a key and central part of ensuring that this change and influence continues.
