We are seeking a Policy and Research Assistant to support the policy and research functions within Scottish Families, led by the CEO, aiming to create insight, grow the evidence base, and deliver impact and change to improve outcomes for families affected by alcohol and drugs. The role includes internal and external work with the Scottish Families Team and Board, family members, government, public bodies, politicians, third sector and academic partners.

The post will be based at Edward House, Glasgow – Scottish Families’ national office. (Note that staff are currently working between home and office). The post is a national support role and so involves some travel and very occasional out-of-hours working. The post is part of the Scottish Families’ staff team and is supervised by the CEO.

The post-holder will provide policy and research support to members of Scottish Families staff team, relevant to their own roles, including responding to staff requests for support, and facilitating our ‘embedded evaluation’ approach within the organisation; develop evidence-based policy papers and responses (including government and other consultations), including gathering and representing the views and experiences of families; support internal thematic and short-life working groups with monitoring and recording their activities; contribute to the development and delivery of new quantitative and qualitative research projects led by Scottish Families and partner organisations; participate in research design, data collection (including via desk research, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups etc), analysis, report-writing, and the written and verbal presentation of findings; lead our Alcohol Action Group which seeks to highlight and respond to alcohol harm in families and communities; actively participate in national and UK networks in the fields of alcohol, drugs and families; create external content such as blogs, articles and podcasts, on policy and research topics relevant to families; contribute to the development of Scottish Families Evidence Bank; and facilitate and support family engagement and influence across our policy and research work.

We are seeking applicants who have a degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional qualification; experience of producing evidence-based reports (policy and/or research-based) and quantitative and qualitative research design, delivery, data analysis and interpretation; knowledge of issues for families affected by substance use; an investigative and inquiring mind; the ability to review, analyse, interpret and prioritise complex data and information; and excellent report writing and IT literacy skills.
