An exciting opportunity to join our college as a Director of the Board
Newbattle Abbey College is seeking to recruit several new members to its Board of Directors. You may never have considered a Board position before; however, your experience may be invaluable! Many of us do not realise how much we have to offer, so even if you are not sure that the Boardroom is for you, please contact us and discuss the role and the contribution you could make.
The Board of Directors has a pivotal role in achieving our ambition. As a Director of the Board, you will demonstrate commitment, provide leadership and strategic direction for the College, drive excellence in corporate governance, and support staff to deliver the highest standards of learning and teaching. The Board also has a crucial role in engaging with key stakeholders, businesses, and employers across the community and beyond. Board Directors are expected to act as public ambassadors and advocates for the College, valuing and respecting diversity and promoting an ethos of inclusion, equality, and positive well-being.
The time commitment may be up to 10 days per year, mainly in the afternoons/early evenings. The post is not remunerated; however, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The appointment term will be up to four years in the first instance.

We are seeking enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated people to join our board.
About us:
Urban Uprising improves the life chances of disadvantaged young people using rock climbing. Our programmes deliver physical, social and personal development, and gives young people access to highly trained positive role models though our coaches.
We give young people who wouldn’t normally have the chance an opportunity to experience the transformational personal change that rock climbing can bring.
We work in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Cambridge and Bristol, and partner with local youth organisations to reach young people experiencing disadvantage, often from deprived communities.
Our Board:
Urban Uprising is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), and we have a Board of Trustees with a diverse skill set who come from a range of backgrounds. The Board meets 4 times a year at a minimum and engages with each other and staff throughout the year.
Role and requirements:
We are seeking enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated people who care deeply about helping disadvantaged young people. Being on our board is a rewarding role and you will help Urban Uprising in its mission to improve the lives of disadvantaged youth. You will play a central role in the governance of Urban Uprising at this exciting time of growth and development. A reasonable regular and consistent commitment of time is required.
We are looking for two people to join the Board. One Regular Trustee and one Trustee with finance skills that will learn from the current Treasurer, with a view to taking over that role.
Being located in the central belt of Scotland or Bristol is preferred but not essential. Although the role is non-remunerated, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed with training and induction provided. No previous Trustee experience is needed. Urban Uprising is an inclusive charity and we welcome applications from people of all ages, and from all communities.
We are excited to share this great opportunity to join our Board of Directors. It is a very important time for Cornerstone, as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and set a course for the future, with our new strategy ‘Future proofing Cornerstone’.
As a member of our Board, you would be instrumental in guiding the strategic future of the charity and ensuring exemplary governance and fiscal control. The main Board meets four times a year and, as members may be asked to support our key strategic subcommittees. You will also act as a local ambassador for Cornerstone.
Our Board are particularly keen to hear from those with skills, knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas who feel they can make a positive contribution to our charitable activities: -
- Management experience in social care compliance / quality and standards
- Senior management experience in the social work / social care sector with strategic planning skills
- Business Development experience ideally with Marketing / PR experience

Our Board of Directors
Cornerstone currently has board members with expertise ranging from HR, Finance, Social Care and Fundraising. The role of our Board is to ensure that Cornerstone is being well managed in the best interests of our stakeholders and most importantly the people we support. The Board ensures that the organisation’s strategy and policies are adhered to in line with our charitable purpose. The Board also ensures that Cornerstone complies with all applicable rules and regulations.

Time Commitment: Attending 4 x Board Meetings per year. Attending 1 x General Meeting per year.
Meetings are held in person on a Thursday from 1:30pm – 3:00pm at Craighalbert Centre, 1 Craighalbert Way, Cumbernauld, G68 0LS, with remote attendance available where required. Approximately 4 hours per month Trustee business in support of the Centre
Terms of Office: Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term of office, with renewal for one further 3-year term to a maximum of 6-years. (Currently under review)
Salary: Unpaid (voluntary role)
Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses can be reimbursed.
Start Date: The appointee is expected to take up the post as soon as possible.
Who are we?
The SCCMI is one of only seven Scottish Government funded Grant Aided Special Schools. The Centre includes an independent school for children and young people with additional support needs, nursery services and inreach/ outreach learning and therapeutic services that support families and practitioners throughout Scotland. The children and young people attending the school and nursery experience complex health and learning needs. Families supported through inreach/ outreach services are affected by a broad range of disability impacting on motor function and learning. Our aim is simple; to support children, young people, and their families to attain and maintain the highest level of holistic well-being possible. Our ethos is to get it right for every child helping children and young people gain the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for life in the 21st century.
Trustee: Role Overview
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the SCCMI achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the SCCMI has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision.
Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable the SCCMI to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission to enable all children/young people with motor learning difficulties throughout Scotland to develop their cognitive, psychomotor abilities, and life skills to improve the quality of their lives and achieve their maximum level of independence.
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
