Role

Sport and physical activity is an important part of developing healthy individuals, along with creating a thriving community and developing the employability of our students.

The role of the Sports Development Coordinator will develop the foundations to transform, create and deliver a sustainable Sporting Community. This will include increasing opportunities for students to take part in Sport and Physical activity across the Highlands and Islands and supporting Sports clubs to develop greater resilience and sustainability. The Coordinator will also play a key role in signposting and encouraging students to develop an active lifestyle, working with both internal and external partners to increase the awareness of physical activity initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Engagement

  • Develop physical activity initiatives across the partnership to encourage sustainable physical health and encourage more students to become active.
  • Support student-led sport clubs, supporting facilities management where relevant.
  • Create and develop digital content in collaboration with the Communications team, including promoting opportunities/courses and a monthly newsletter.
  • Coordinate events over the course of the academic year in both local areas and regionally.
  • Work in partnership with UHI to build sports development opportunities for students through academic courses.
  • Support the delivery of large-scale departmental projects, specifically with work surrounding sport, and assisting with Freshers Fairs.
  • Target specific groups to reduce barriers to participation and promote activities that lead to an increase in activity levels for students.
  • Lead on sporting projects like the Sporting Blues Project, team sports, club connections, etc.
  • Assist the Activities Department in their role as a focal point for student activities enquiries through the Activities Inbox, ensuring that referred requests for information are directed to appropriate teams and that sports and activity inquiries are dealt with promptly and efficiently.
  • Assist in the development of clear organization and procedural practices to increase sustainability and resilience of sports/health programming, clubs, and volunteerism.
  • Lead on digital competitions or participation programs with apps like Strava.
  • Community Engagement
  • Maintain and develop relationships with SportScotland, SSS, BUCS, Sports Councils, Community Hubs and other relevant organisations to enhance the opportunities for students at UHI.
  • Conduct research to support the development of sport and physical activity across all UHI partners.
  • Identify and apply for sustainable funding resources for sporting or physical activity programmes from relevant bodies, both in the UK and internationally.
  • Identify and promote training opportunities for both staff and students across the network, including courses and workshops in relevant areas.
  • Participate in and represent sports in appropriate team meetings, conferences, and training events across Scotland in Sports Development. I.e.: SSS, BUCS.
  • Build relationships with local community clubs and the UHI network to promote and develop opportunities for students to play an active role in community participation.
  • Work with relevant colleagues to identify sponsorship opportunities with community and commercial partners.

General

  • To adhere to all relevant HISA policy, procedures and governing documents at all times.
  • To undertake appropriate training and development as required for the role.
  • To undertake any other duties appropriate to the role, role grade and organisation, within their competence as required by management, to provide operational cover or support for colleagues including absence and periods of peak workload as required.
  • It may be necessary for the post-holder to work out of hours on occasion e.g. to cover events and extended office opening hours. A system of time off in lieu will operate to cover this.
  • A degree of travel between campuses will be expected.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Training and Experience

Essential:

  • Educated to HNC, Highers or equivalent
  • Experience working with, managing or supervising volunteers
  • Experience developing training for staff or volunteers
  • Experience in delivery of support, advice and information to a diverse audience

Desirable:

  • Experience delivering large - scale projects
  • Experience in budgeting, and financial systems
  • Experience in Sports Development
  • Experience in meeting management and administration
  • Qualified in Sports Coaching
  • Experience working in rural communities

Skills, Knowledge and Ability

Essential:

  • Excellent self-management skills including time management, autonomy and initiative
  • Knowledge of Higher Education and Further Education
  • Able to work effectively in a democratic environment
  • Able to deal with multiple deadlines and conflicting priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including communication, leadership and negotiation with people at all levels

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of the principles of health and safety, and experience in completing risk assessments
  • Appropriate level of IT skills and willingness to learn new software packages.
