Advice Worker BEMAS (Black & Ethnic Minority Advice Service)

Help us make a difference to families that can face the most barriers to getting the support that they need.

The Action Group is recruiting for an enthusiastic, focussed, professional individual, to work within our valuable BEMAS service. This service is for parents from Black Minority Ethnic Communities who have a child with a disability.

The successful candidate will work as part of a small team to support and empower parents in the following ways:

  • Provide advice, assistance and representation across a range of issues (including Welfare Benefits)
  • Connect parents into services that can help them and their children
  • Run regular support groups for parents.
  • Build the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents
  • We would particularly welcome applications from those with experience of living or working within a Black or Ethnic Minority Community.

The ideal candidate will have the desire and confidence to develop quickly within a new role.

You will have the following skills:

  • The ability to build relationships with a variety of different people and professionals
  • The ability to understand and analyse information and use this to give advice – within group settings as well as to individuals
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent administration skills

The following skills may also be helpful, but are non-essential:

  • The ability to speak a community language
  • Experience of working in a diverse community

You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in:

  • Project management
  • Designing and delivering workshops
  • Partnership working
  • Providing Advice on Welfare Benefits and income maximisation

The post will be based at Norton Park and will require travel across Edinburgh, and may work some evenings and at weekends where required.
