Edinburgh University Students’ Association is looking for a Representation & Democracy Manager to join the Membership Support & Development Team
The Representation and Democracy Manager is responsible for the effective provision and development of support for student representation and democratic systems at the Students’ Association. Leading our committed and enthusiastic Representation and Democracy team which includes specific support for academic representation, welfare and liberation, and wider policy and campaigns on everything from accommodation to sustainability, this role is responsible for ensuring students are at the heart of decision-making on issues that matter to them both within and beyond the Association and the University.
The role entails working closely with our 5 elected sabbatical officers, ensuring they are supported effectively to deliver their objectives and campaigns, and to represent students within the University and beyond. In addition, the Representation and Democracy Manager works collaboratively with other colleagues to support the Association’s delivery of high quality support, training and development opportunities for student reps and leaders in a range of roles. The role also includes liaising with the university to ensure that the Students’ Association’s engagement on behalf of students centrally and at College and School level is effective.
We have recently transformed our democracy and governance, including introducing new democratic structures and representative roles. These are having a positive impact with increasing levels of engagement, and we are keen to ensure this positive progress continues – this particular role is key to continuing to develop and deliver effective outcomes and impact.
The successful candidate will be educated to degree level, with at least 2 years’ experience of working within a membership/campaigning organization, of supporting staff in a line management capacity, and of providing support for policy development and implementation. You will have an understanding of both the student experience and the diverse profile of University of Edinburgh students, alongside an awareness and appreciation of the relevant legislation applicable to the political context of student unions and issues related to student democracy and governance.
You will be adept at managing complex projects, with experience of leading and motivating diverse groups, and the ability to think strategically and manage change within a multi-disciplinary environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to build and maintain good working relationships with students, staff and stakeholders across the Students’ Association and the University, and beyond.
