Role

Stand Alone is the only UK organisation supporting people who are estranged from family or a key family member. Breaking down stigma and encouraging social inclusion is at the heart of our constitution and we are currently strategically focussed on the rights of estranged young people aged 16-25.

We're looking for a dynamic Advocacy Officer to represent us in Scotland, helping us to raise awareness and develop the voice of estranged students and young people with key professionals and political leaders.

Estranged young people do not have contact (or may have strained contact) with their family or a key family member. They may have similar backgrounds to young people with care experience, yet have often been missed by the care system. Subsequently, they lack the same rights and visibility as those who are care experienced.

Young people in this position have often experienced diffiuclties with new step-parents, have been rejected by family for coming out as LGBT+ or have different morals, values and beliefs to their families of origin. It is our overall aim to bring more substantial support in Scotland for this group, both in the Higher Education sector and with Local Authorities and Scottish Government.

The organisation has made a strong start in advocating for this group in Scotland, particularly in the Higher Education sector. We are now looking for the right person to build on that progress more locally and further amplify the voice of estranged young people, whilst strengthening our networks and influence.

Part-time contract: 3 days per week

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain good relationships with young people estranged from family and help them to build a campaigning voice with key people who may wish to support them.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, including charities relevant to the work of Stand Alone e.g. care, housing, homelessness, mental health, LGBT charities.
  • Lead and expand existing Stakeholder group of HE professionals and advocates.
  • Develop and organise opportunities for Stand Alone to engage with MSPs and key individuals in the development of policy in Scotland to influence legislation and government programmes
  • Research and analyse current policies, and put forward clear objectives for change and equality within the landscape.

Your skills and experience:

  • Commitment to improving the experiences and circumstances of estranged students in HE and estranged young people in Scotland more broadly (E)
  • Interpersonal skills to build relationships and engage a wide range of stakeholders (E)
  • Interest in or willingness to develop understanding of estrangement / family breakdown (E)
