Do you want to support pet owners who are homeless or in housing crisis?

We are recruiting for a new position which will involve working with colleagues within the homeless and housing (voluntary and statutory), animal welfare and veterinary sectors across Scotland to develop and deliver a targeted regional strategy that will increase accommodation and support options for homeless pet owners and help homelessness services to become pet friendly.

This 12-month fixed term unique post is funded by Dogs Trust and the Simon Community to make a difference to the lives of homeless dog owners and their pets across Scotland. As experts in their sectors, these charities have come together with the aim of increasing accommodation and support options for homeless dog owners, by supporting voluntary and statutory homelessness services across Scotland. This post is managed and delivered by Dogs Trust, but the post-holder will be expected to work closely with our Simon Community colleagues and other key established contacts in Scotland.

The bases for this project are Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth and will require the post-holder to be flexible and ‘hot-desk’ across Dogs Trust and Simon Community offices in these areas.

The role is 35 hours per week, Mon to Fri, 9am to 5pm (with a requirement to undertake occasional out of hours working; such as attending events and meetings during the evenings or weekends).

Access to a vehicle for work purposes and the willingness to travel across Scotland as needed is essential. This may also include occasional overnight stays.

Freedom Project Regional Assistant – Scotland

Dogs Trust is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK with a nationwide network of rehoming centres and charity shops. Last year, Dogs Trust centres cared for over 14,000 dogs; we never put a healthy dog down.

Dogs Trust Freedom Project is a pet fostering service for people fleeing domestic abuse. However, the majority of our referrals come from women fleeing domestic abuse via women-only services. The service places dogs into volunteer foster homes on a temporary basis until their owners are able to have them back.

We are seeking a confident and well-organised individual who is passionate about helping animals and people. As Freedom Project Regional Assistant, you will support the evaluation and matching of dog referrals received from our stakeholder referral agencies. You will also assess the suitability of volunteer foster carers for the dogs by carrying out home checks and interviews and update clients on their pet’s progress.

You must be experienced and competent in assessing and handling a wide range of dogs in a working environment such as an animal charity or rescue/rehoming centre and have experience in giving dog welfare advice to owners and handlers, with an understanding of positive reinforcement techniques.

A large part of this role involves driving a small van and transporting dogs across Scotland on a daily basis, so candidates should have a full, clean, manual UK driving license and experience of driving as part of a previous role. An understanding of the problems faced by people fleeing domestic abuse with pets is expected as is a motivation to help and support vulnerable pet owners.

This is a full-time permanent post at 35 hours per week, Mon to Fri, 9am to 5pm (candidates will be required to undertake occasional out of hours working to support the needs of the service).
