Smart Works is a dynamic, high profile and fast-growing UK charity that dresses and coaches unemployed women for success at their job interview.

We empower each woman by giving her the clothes, coaching and the confidence she needs to succeed. After visiting Smart Works, 62% secure a job within a month, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.

The Smart Works service is delivered in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Reading. Each centre is an independent charity with its own Board of Trustees, but is part of the wider Smart Works group.

Over the last eight years, Smart Works has helped 20,000 women. It is our mission that any woman who needs our service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre.

Smart Works has been voted Social Action Charity of the Year and is honoured to have The Duchess of Sussex as our Patron.

About the Role

Smart Works Edinburgh is looking for a qualified accountant to join their Board of Trustees as Treasurer. This is an important position, with the successful candidate working closely with the Chairwoman of Trustees to ensure Smart Works Edinburgh is well-run, effective and there for any woman who needs our help.

The Treasurer has oversight of the financial management of Smart Works Edinburgh, monitoring the financial health of the charity and providing the wider Board with the financial information they need to make thoughtful and considered decisions.

The successful candidate will oversee the financial affairs of Smart Works Edinburgh, ensuring financial procedures are in place, proper records are kept and regularly review income and expenditure. The Treasurer will also oversee the production of key financial reports, returns and audits.

Smart Works Edinburgh is part of the wider Smart Works group, and the Treasurer will be supported in their role by the Smart Works head office. This includes the Group Head of Finance, who manages the annual budget, audit and consolidation process, and a Group Finance Manager, who assists with bookkeeping, reconciliation and reporting through our accounting package, Xero. They will also attend monthly Treasurer calls with the Group Treasurer.

Centre Manager

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Centre Manager to join the team at Smart Works Edinburgh.

The role is integral to the success of Smart Works and therefore requires a self-starting and proactive approach, excellent organisational skills and the ability to take sole responsibility for all aspects of the operational and day to day management of the Edinburgh centre.

There will be significant interaction with a diverse group including clients, referral partners (for example Job Centre Plus and Work Programme Providers). You will also be working with our corporate and retail partners, and our dedicated team of skilled volunteers, as well as have a responsibility for recruiting and managing teams.

A highly organised and positive individual, you will be passionate about empowering women to thrive in work and life. You will be a strong communicator, both verbally and in writing, be able to multi-task, think on your feet and bring a determination to meet our aim of helping as many women as we can back into work. You will be confident in using IT to manage operations and produce reports.

Overall you would relish the opportunity of working in a start-up charity and all the challenges that it will entail. The role would be based in Edinburgh City Centre, and it is anticipated that there will be occasional evening and weekend work.

Smart Works Edinburgh is part of Smart Works Charity, and there will be some travel to London and liaison with the HQ team to support on induction, training and participation in regular meetings, phone calls and conferences with other Smart Works centres across the UK.

Fundraising and Partnerships Manager

This is a hugely exciting time for Smart Works as we are expanding our services across Scotland. Alongside our centre in Edinburgh, we plan to open a new centre in Glasgow in the Autumn, becoming Smart Works Scotland, subject to pending legal permissions.

We are looking for an energetic, creative and forward-thinking individual to join our dynamic team and ensure the long-term future of Smart Works in Scotland. The role requires a self-starting and proactive approach, excellent communication and networking skills and experience in generating income.

The Fundraising and Partnerships Manager will have responsibility for all aspects of fundraising including the design and delivery of Smart Works Scotland’s annual fundraising strategy and quarterly activity plan with a clear purpose of ensuring our long-term sustainability. Reporting to Smart Works Scotland Chair of the Board, the successful candidate will lead a range of activities, including:

  • Managing corporate relationships and associated fundraising, building excellent relationships to forge new partnerships and generate income.
  • Using an excellent network to identify appropriate grant opportunities to support our bid writer and ensuring that monitoring and reporting of progress to funders is both timely and sufficient
  • Delivering financial activities to target, maintaining an up-to-date database with relevant income tracking and pipeline information to facilitate regular financial reporting to the Board of Trustees
  • Managing wider partnership activation plans across the charity, including corporate volunteer opportunities.
  • Supporting the Fundraising Events Manager on the organisation, recruitment of participants and implementation of events.
  • Managing and recruiting for third-party fundraising events e.g. marathons, Kiltwalks
  • Managing our annual fundraising campaigns such as Cycle for Smart Works, leading on corporate engagement.
  • Developing new ways to engage our corporate and supporter audiences
  • Representing Smart Works Scotland when working with a diverse range of stakeholders including corporate and retail audiences, grant providers and our fundraising volunteers.

The Service Delivery Manager in Edinburgh will be taking day to day responsibility for managing and maintaining a ‘best in class’ service. As the face of our Edinburgh centre, they will ensure Smart Works is embedded in the local community, with a steady stream of clients being referred for our dressing and coaching appointments.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate their track record of building strong relationships and making things happen. Our ideal candidate will share our passion for helping clients succeed, believe in the power of volunteering and will be a real people-person, who will enjoy meeting new people every day.

The Service Delivery Manager must be a natural relationship builder, who is a confident public speaker. They will also be organised, an excellent multi-tasker and will thrive in a fast-paced office. We are looking for a true team-player, with a proven track record of rolling-up their sleeves and delivering results.

The successful candidate will build strong working relations with our staff team, Chair and Board of Trustees, as well as the team at Smart Works HQ. We are a community that shares a passion to empower women to thrive in work and life,
