Thanks to the Blue Planet II effect, a small visionary project started in the Moray Firth has grown into a Scotland-wide initiative to comprehensively capture and map, through aerial photography, litter along the Scottish mainland's entire coastline.
This innovative third sector collaboration between the Moray Firth Partnership, Marine Conservation Society and Sky Watch (UKCAP) involves an experienced fleet of volunteer pilots identifying and recording coastline affected by litter and pollution. That evidence is mapped through an interactive web-based hub that helps direct targeted clean-up activities.
The SCRAPbook map launched in August to huge acclaim and positive reaction, followed by additional investment from the Scottish Government to develop engagement and clean-up activities focusing on the worst polluted areas. We now need a dynamic, creative and engaging individual with a collaborative approach and excellent communications experience to join the team and help develop the next exciting phase of SCRAPbook.
The post will be based in Inverness, with team members in Perth and Argyll and supported by a small project board representing all three partner charities. The Moray Firth Partnership will be the direct employer of this post. The post is part funded by the Scottish Government through Marine Scotland.
- develop and deliver a communications strategy that showcases the project and drives meaningful interest and engagement with SCRAPbook
- manage media and social media content for maximum local and national reach
- engage local, regional and national clubs, associations, businesses, and appropriate groups to unlock volunteer support for clean-up activities using the map to target efforts
- work with key stakeholders to unlock wider engagement opportunities liaising closely with the Technical Coordinator and project board
- working with the marine litter officers, design targeted clean up engagement plans for non-Local Coastal Partnership areas i.e. Argyll and North/West Highlands
- working with the Technical Coordinator support development of website and promotional materials especially image and video based
- attend SCRAPbook-related meetings including with Scotland’s local coastal partnerships
- contribute to project delivery and reporting as required
- contribute to funding and campaign activities as required
Based in Inverness, with regular travel across Scotland with occasional overnight stays. Evening and weekend work may be required. Own car an advantage.
The person: (skills, knowledge and experience)
- at least 3 years in a communications role, utilising multiple channels
- excellent writing skills particularly for traditional and social media with demonstrable success in delivering successful press/social media campaigns
- excellent stakeholder and community engagement skills, particularly encouraging participation and contribution (volunteer or corporate)
- proven ability to energise and encourage participation from diverse groups
- high proficiency of Office 365 packages, preferably cloud-based
- must be a team player with great people skills and a friendly manner
- able to manage/prioritise own workload effectively and work well within a disparate and multi-disciplinary team
- UK Driver’s Licence
- experience/understanding of local authorities or waste management sector
- experience of working with national organisations e.g. businesses and public sector
- knowledge of coastal and marine litter and pollution
- knowledge of wider coastal and marine litter policy landscape and challenges
- understanding of maritime industries and leisure craft

Over the last 12 months, under new management, the Moray Firth Partnership has undertaken a wide-ranging programme of modernisation, investing in systems and processes that will ensure we are ‘fit for purpose’ as we develop our ambitious work programme.
We are now seeking an experienced, friendly, and capable individual to join us at this exciting time. We are looking to further enhance our internal systems so you would need to be well organised, show good initiative and logic, and be a team player. Understanding of finance and payroll are key elements of this role. We are a small but dedicated staff, with a passion to grow the Partnership to deliver fully for the communities and businesses we work with from Wick right round to Fraserburgh.
