Chair (Convenor)

  • Management Board
  • Unpaid
  • Edinburgh
  • Closing 7th May 2023

Could you be the new Chair of Volunteer Edinburgh’s board of trustees?

A talented, diverse and committed Board is at the heart of Volunteer Edinburgh’s success. Established in 1973, Volunteer Edinburgh has been at the vanguard of volunteering development in Scotland for 50 years. Volunteer Edinburgh innovated many of today’s accepted, standard volunteer centre services, including health and wellbeing volunteering, employability volunteering, web-based self-selection services for prospective volunteers, flexible volunteer engagement and online learning and capacity building.

Our mission is to inspire more people to volunteer so they can enhance their lives, the lives of others and build resilient communities.

The Board of Trustees is now seeking a new Chair (known as the Convenor) to lead the Board to meet its governance responsibilities and provide strategic direction for the organisation. The Convenor works closely and productively with the Chief Officer.

The role is a voluntary, unpaid position. Out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Skills and qualities

As well as a strong commitment to our mission and values, the new Convenor will have sound leadership skills and experience of strategic and organisational development. They will enjoy facilitating collective decision-making and have experience of supporting and working constructively with senior management. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and experience.

Time commitment

On average the time commitment is a few hours each month. The Board usually meets in the early evening, six times per year. The Convenor may also attend additional sub-group meetings and training sessions. Meetings with the Chief Officer take place on an ad hoc basis at mutually agreed times. Once a year, all Board members are expected to attend a Board and Staff development and planning day.
